Good turbo gearing? 3.31s with a 28 inch tire
good load for an M6 car? too much?
im looking to be able to load this turbo up at the drag strip. I currently have 4.11's and 325/50/15s i came from a nitrous/cam setup. I may be able to get a 3 series carrier with a 3.31 gear in it for my 12 bolt.
Any m6 guys have some input?

A couple of things to consider here. First, what gear do you want to cross the traps in. Once you figure that out do a little bit of calculating with your tire size, tranny gear ratios and ideal rpm (Where you are making your peak power.) and the gearing will stand out for you. I see allot of turbo guys that will run 3.73's with a 28-in tall tire only to realize down the road that they decreased their ET and increased their MPH by going to a numerically lower (3.23 and the like.) gear. I had 3.55 gears in my Mustang and ran a c-4 with a Cartech Outlaw kit (76-mm) on it. I dropped the gearing to a 3.08 and the car responded with a 9.28 vs. a 9.5xx and trapped a few mph higher. It also helped settle the car down when I left the line. Hope this makes sense. Take care.

Again, not an M6 here, but I'm running a 3.00 with a 26" tire. I trap 146 mph at 6400 rpm and my hp peaks at 5700, so it's geared about perfect. Forget about "loading the turbo" and gear it to hit redline as you go through the traps.

so you think i should just gear it the same as a NA car in respect to hitting redline as i cross the traps?
my turbo is pretty large, its a large frame with a 76mm wheel. in first gear i get full boost by 4k rpm and it pulls for the rest of the run. Thats mainly why i was asking if i could benefit by going down in gearing.
I appreciate the input everyone, seems like everyone is running an A3 at this point lol.

i have a M6 right now (soon changing to A2/A3) and I agree with Mike on gearing it for the traps rather than the turbo...It just makes sense to do it that way because the gearing/tire size really dictate trap RPM, not the turbo.

there are quick and easy online calculators for this i just google any time i need to use.
3.31 on a 28" tire is waay too much, i bet 4.10 would even be fine for you depending on the cam

I though 3.73's were as low as you could go with a 4 series
i know it is when you are running a full spool with a strange 12 Bolt.

2.75's in the 9" checking in. Definately a cheap ger, got them for $25 off ebay lol. Highway driving is just a pleasurable cruise, 75mph is 2800 rpms on 25.6" tall tires = 2700 rpms. I still manage 1.5x 60's at the track on a 26x11.50x16 ET et street.
I changed from 4.10's to 3.42's to 3.50's to 2.75's and the car has 60 footed and been the fastest with the 2.75s. I have a friend with some 3.0's and they work reall well with a 26" tall tire, car went 10.20 @ 133 with a 1.50 60'

3.50's was as a 6spd and a3
2.75's is as a a3

At the track with 4.10's it wasn't the nicest. When the boost would come in and the car really start pulling it would be time to shift again.
Now i have yet to make it to the track yet with the 3.73's but i can say this, with the 3.73's on the highway with street wheels the car pulls WAY harder and longer. I am curious to see what the 28" slicks do with the gear change but i think it is going to be a lot nicer.
i had also thrown around the idea of the 3.42's but i figured with the price of a new carrier and new gear set i would start with the 3.73's and go from there. I don't think (with a M6 car) i would go any higher than a 3.42 though.

That right there is the reason I went with 3.25's in the 9 inch. I can run my 315 BFG DR's on the street and the 28x10.5's at the track. Hopefully it will turn out to be the best of both worlds for my car.
