Yes, the speed inc kit needs the speed inc alt.

I got a smoking hawk kit, looks pretty good, but most importantly it WORKS.
It has been used, and tested by many, and i havn't seen an issue yet.

Thanks smokin hawk.

No clearance issues at all. I know you cant tell by these pics, but.

Lined up perfect, and its sturdy.

Another added fyi. I have the thunder tensioner, with a march under drive pulley, with the alt up top. Its a 710k6 or 71 inch belt. i tried a 71.5 but couldn't get it tight enough, 71 is perfect.

Thanks, Chris

Even if i wasn't turbo id almost want it up top. Man would it suck to change one down there. Getting the harness off was a pain, i broke it, and getting the charging wire that goes to the battery was rough so i just cut it, and ran new wires. Now its easy to change, so if my alt goes bad its not even a 5 min install.

lmao how often do u have to change an alternator?Im turbo'd and can reach down the driverside and unplug the signal wire and reach down the same spot and unscrew the terminal on the back.besides its looks alot cleaner under the hood with it hidden

i had another custom one on my car with issues and the power cable was close to valve cover and always scared me.

the speed inc kit does require a new alternator but well elimnate the tensioner and by far the best kit out there

well im glad people like my bracket, if anything is wrong with one, either my screw up, or some weird installation requirement, i do my best to make it right and help them out.

i've had to change my alternator out once (now i got autozones lifetime warranty), due to it going bad, and it is nice that its up top and easy to get to, even if my car wasnt turboed i think id keep it there

I agree its a million times better there. Gm should of put it there to begin with. Smokinhawk i sent you a pm, about a lilttle issue i was having with your pulley. I can get you pictures if you like.

Ps.. Do you see using the thunder racing tensioner being a problem? do i have to get a stock one with your bracket? i got the belt tight, buts it keeps coming off the ps pulley a little. Havn't throw it yet, or gotten that close, but im afraid of it happening.

Thanks, Chris

is there another GM alternator that is thinner/shorter (like speed inc's) that can be used? like one from a truck or vette or s/thing that has the same wiring as the f-body? plugs can be different but it would be nice if the wires are the same.

i dont wanna get the speed inc one and if/when the alternator goes out im stuck buying that one.

i can make a bracket but the stock one will not clear the heads. need a thinner alternator. my alternator can not be higher than the throttle body and the oil filler cap for hood clearance issues.

also. any body know how hard is it to shorten up the stock one? i seen some where on here where some one did it. i think this is a pic of it out of the FAQ.

help......

I was having this exact problem with one or two ribs slipping off the power steering pulley. Check the belt/ alt pulley alignment with the rest of the accessory pulleys. Mine was crooked due to smokin hawks bracket being really close to perfect. Just needed to shim the bracket a little bit and haven't had any problems anymore. You can also order a different pulley with higher outer lips from another GM vehicle ( i forget which ) but it's the same size and works.
