Just an opinion, but i'd try to get a nice one in case you do decide to go air/water in the future. The nicer the cooler the easier it will be to sell
To answer your question....the ATI 3 core and/or Sheetmetal 3 core will do just fine

700 - 1,000 hp FI folks? Is there anyone who is appreciably over 700 now? I'll bet that massive thing Y2KHawk put in his bumper will do the trick, but you know about him.
I would think that your intake manifold would pose a problem long before a large air/air intercooler would. Are you going with something custom on this?

Thanks for the link to that site...
The ATI 3 core sheetmetal is good for up to 1000hp.
The non-sheetmetal is rated up to 700hp.
I've got 1-2 local sources potentially for intercoolers but they are a bit busy...
I'm shooting for 800 crank hp Mark.
Harlan last year was probably around 800 crank hp, and ScottWS6 must be pushing 700-750 crank hp to push his 3700 tank to 132 mph trap speeds.

I'm running the same setup that my roomate is using (pictures below) - it's a custom spearco unit - 3 core, good for over 1800 CFM, with sheetmetal endtanks.

I would probably want something better than the ATI 3 core for a YS trim - even with the sheetmetal endtanks. Plus I don't like the extra routing when using the ATI setup. Your best bet is to talk to spearco or one of their dealers and get a setup made for your application - you can draw out the endtanks in autocad, etc. and they will weld them to your spec (what we did).

Does anyone have the phone number to Spearco? I am going to get an air to water IC and ordered some information from them. It has not come in the six weeks ago that I ordered their intercooler theory book and their catologue. I have searched for the page where I found the number when I first ordered the info, but I cannot find it

This what Jim from Speed Inc. has in the nose of his 96 SS.
I wonder if that will fit into the nose of my 98 Formula. The dimensions I believe are 3x13x27.

ChrisB, what are the total dimensions of your custom intercooler? How deep is that setup, 3", 3.5 or 4.2"?
If anyone has fitted a nose mounted intercooler into a 98-02 Firebird nose, and knows how wide we can go I'd be grateful. I'm not sure if we have less room end to end with our popup headlights.
Right now I am assuming I can make 4 deep, 13 tall, 27 wide work (total with the tanks welded on), but I am also wondering if 5.5 deep would work.

Rob Raymer has a HUGE intercooler stuffed in the front of his car. I think there are pics on his website.

I am very very interested in a bigger intercooler. Everyone would laugh if ya'll saw the size of the intercooler that comes with the ATI truck kit. A little 2-core POS.
How much is a custom one? And the best place to get one?

It really depends on what you are looking for. You could run an air to air intercooler with a water injection system or nos to spray the intercooler. Or run an air to water intercooler. This might be more efficient for those power levels. It also holds more of an advantage at the track, you can use dry ice, or frezzing water to bring those temps down. I have learned my lesson with air to air. Right now I am in the process of removing my air to air from my car. Since mine is in the trunk of my car, I was unable to break the 550 mark due to extreme temps. Now I'm in the process of installing a custom spearco air to water setup to eventually hit 600 plus.

UPDATE:
Tony from CAS came through for me, I picked up the air/air from his shop on Saturday.
It's a 3 core, and the dimensions are approximately 3.15 x 24 x 12. The inlet and outlet are 3 inches. It is supposed to handle 800rwhp. It is pretty small but compared to the ATI sheetmetal intercooler I have a lot less tank and a lot more core area. It does look rather small but it will fit in the nose without me needing to cut any of the radiator supports.
