Default Pressurized gas tank?

Does anyone else running an aftermarket fueling setup (w/return) have pressure in their gas tank?

When I've gone through 3/4 tank and I unscrew the gas cap to fill up, I get a significant whoosh of pressure being released around the cap as it's unscrewed.

I wouldn't want to have a lit cig in my mouth when it happens, I'll tell you that.

But is this a problem?

Don't have that problem. Run a return system w/ Aeromotive 1000 regulator.

Gas evaporates, it builds pressure, it whooshes (or whatever) when pressure is released. This is entirely normal, and BTW, a lit cig will NEVER ignite gasoline. Forget all of the movie BS. You could spray a perfect gasoline F/A mix on a lit cig, and it will NOT ignite. But back on topic, it is the nature of a closed system with a volatile, low flashpoint chemical to build pressure. In fact, it is intended in the design, as the EPA fascists seem to think evaporation from an open tank will make Al Gore too butt-hurt.

Every vehicle I've had has had some kind of pressure on the tank.

LOLOLOLOLOLOL!!! I'm unloading ice cream in the SoCal area, and they said on the radio yesterday to fill your fuel tank in the cool evening so there is not as much vapor escaping to create ground smog or something like that.

Just looked on google quick. They say it makes "bad ozone". ROFL

Hahaha, well this is genious. Next time some dbag is messing with fuel and has a cig in their mouth, let's hope they have the perfect A/F ratio for the atmosphere...14.7:1, and then we can all die. It just seems to me that any amount of fuel released into the atmosphere is going to evaporate since we have billions and billions of cubic feet of air, so having the proper "A/F" ratio without the mixture being in a closed container is impossible, and I don't know how youre going to spray that on a cigarette. Once evaporation occurs, the vapors become flammable, so, if you'd like to test your theory, please post the vid on youtube....open air, lit cig, fuel vapors coming from your fuel tank into your face. I'd enjoy that.

...just to elaborate a little, this is a LOT of pressure, not just a little --phizzz-- it's enough to blow your mullet back a bit, and lasts for a couple of seconds.

Still waiting on the Lit Cig Video...

But in the meantime check out this FLIR imaging of fumes at the pump: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_NswgZFgzA&NR=1

I bet the fumes releasing from my tank are 20x that volume. Yikes.

I used to throw lit cigarettes int a pan of C16 to freak people out at the shop, its not that easy to ignite. I remember mythbusters dropping lit cigarettes into a toiled filled with gasoline with the proper a/f in a closed space..

But anyhow if you have a stock tank with evap still hooked up its normal to have pressure, if you have an aftermarket tank with a vent its not normal to build pressure.

I deleted my evap by capping it off under the hood right on the harline and disconnecting the quick connect line from the canister under the car. I than snipped off the end of the quick connect fitting and placed a small breather on the line and it had a mount that I was able to bolt it down. It was actually the small K&N filter for the air pump from a K&N FIPK. Works great and I hope to get some pics of it up soon. I've been busy and not able to get my build thread up lately with a bunch of pics.

I had this problem and it turned out that Fuel Safe put a spring-loaded tipover valve in my cell that didn't allow pressure out. My cell bulged and did that pressure buildup thing. I had to go into the cell and remove the spring, now the vent is 2-way.
