Default ST80 problem....poop.

Sooooooooo. I finally strapped on the big black bitch (okay not that big). Got MAYBE 25 miles with it on just turtling around. I still have my break in tune loaded so nothing over 4k rpms, and maybe 3 pounds of boost.

I hear a "rattling noise" coming from it. Kinda like when you shake a paint can. It still makes it for about 5 or so seconds once I shut my car off. I can hear the turbo spinning to a stop with some funny pinging or rattle sound.

Of course I was VERY careful with install. Nothing could have been left in the pipes or anything.

Dr. Turbo? Anyone?

stupid question,i assume u have a filter on the turbo, ruling out the possibility of something getting inside the turbo

My turbo rubbed the housing when I first got it. I sent it back for repair before running it. It was fine once it came back. Then again before I ever used it...... I sent it in for a race cover swap and final inspection.....it appeared to be okay upon return.

Turbo was primed before first fire. It has some funny noise.

Any visual evidence of it touching/scrapping? Weld slag? New hot side?

Haven't taken it off yet. I was kinda waiting for Doc Turbos response. All of the hot piping was old.....so no weld scraps. The whole turbo was brand new.

Yank the puppy out and give us a call. If its weld slag or something else that is metal it will definitely cause the noise you are saying.

Will do. Probably this weekend so I'll call ya guys on Monday or so. But again, there were no new welds on the turbo kit. The kit has AT LEAST 2500 miles since the last time it has been welded.

Sure nothing may have gotten into the piping before connecting this turbo in? We have had a few come back with anything from a bolt through the turbine wheel to a allen wrench wedged in the turbine housing....hehe. So anything can happen....

Yeah the customer was PISSED. The shop that installed the turbo did not even pay for the damages.

You know the coolant seal washers behind the heads on an LT1? Somehow, I dropped one of those into the crossover pipe and it eventually wound up in the turbine snail. Woops!

I know I had a similar problem with the S91. The compressor wheel was touching the housing. Upon further instructions from Jose, I removed the comp. housing and recentered. Bingo, everything was all good. It seems the tolerances from wheel to housing is small and bearing play is big. So you've got to be dead on. Could be something easy like mine.
