I'm going back to Mobil-1 10W-30 after the next oil change. I started running this in my Mustang too.
Right now the Firebird has the break-in racing oil.

Too heavy a dyno oil (like 20/50) actually impedes performance, but gives best protection. 10/40 Synthetic is what I see most often recommended. The 40 weight Syn has the protection of 50 weight dyno, but less fluid weight for the motor to throw around AND it maintains its protection capabilities longer than dyno oil before breakdown, as well.

Now, "what brand" is another story...

I have a well broken in motor. My ARE 415 runs Kendall GT1 20/50 and I've been using it in this motor for 2 years now.

I'm not a fan of synthetic and I prefer the better protection of the heavier oil. With an expensive motor you will change oil more frequently any ways so that is another reason not to use more expensive synthetics.

My car was impeded by the heavier oil to a 10.9 @ 127 Saturday

Is the redline oil synthetic?

Let me put it this way. I've been using Mobil-1 10W-30 synthetic for over 50K miles (basically since I bought the car).
I just had a rebuild done last month. The machine shop asked me if I had just recently put in a new block because the cylinders, rods, etc. were so clean, there was absolutely no wear and tear whatsoever (except the tops of the pistons and valves of course).
After they said that, I'm even further sold on the Mobil-1.

Heya,

Ya, the RedLine is a Synthetic.
Happy with their product.

20/50 is NOT better protection than 10/40 Synthetic. Also, the dino oil will break down faster.

And yes, I've seen tests where Redline Synthetic (NOT a test by that manufacturer) consistently netted up to 10 more RWHP on a 300 RWHP vehicle just by a switch from heavy dino oil to the Redline Synthetic.

I don't think so, I've been to many different auto stores looking for it, I will most likely buy the expensive redline stuff....

Mobil 1 makes a 10-40 but for some reason you can only get it in certian areas .I think if you go to your auto parts stores and tell them to look in the catolog it will be in there and they can order it.I used to work for Mobil and Oreilly auto parts and we could order it but we didnt stock it. I think there are certian forgien cars use it.

I probably dont belong here since I'm not forged and boosted yet, but I only run castrol gtx 20-50 in all my engines, race engines and daily driven vehicles, I do not like synthetics at all, seen too many broken motors due to oil break down, I'm not trying to convert anybody, just my .02

I remember hearing something a couple years ago about the clearances and sizes of the oil passages being too small for a 20/50? Any truth to that statement? I suppose it would be a negligble difference on a higher volume oil pump, but on stock i thought it was best to stay below a 10w40.

Engine Builders who put today's engines together (that I've spoken to), say if your motor is a daily driver (even though you are a weekend race warrior), run 40 weight synthetic... 5W40 is fine, 10W40 is fine.

I prefer Redline and have used Royal Purple, but I've bought 10W40 at my local auto parts stores in both Mobile 1 and Castrol. Each store stocks it in various brands, but are out of it at various times.

All I used to use was 20W-50 Castrol back in the old days, too. But, I'm not too ornery to change what I do when people who know better than me advise. A guy who builds performance motors all day long says absolutely NO ONE who uses Redline oil has come back with scored bearings, and such, for rebuilds. He sees much more wear phenomena with other oils that are changed at more frequent intervals.

I just ran dowstairs to the garage and I have Castrol Syntec 10W-40 Full Synthetic Motor Oil right here in my hot little hands. 10W40 Synthetic exists.

Redline is also the purest sythetic base out there, many other synthetics are mixed with standard oil I believe.
