Default What's needed to hit 450whp with an STS?

Alright so I might be pulling the trigger on an STS camaro, since I recently totalled my cammed SS, I am feeling the need to get something again, and maybe switch it up a bit. I know some people hate the STS system but here are my goals. I'm looking for a pure street car and would like to make around 450-500whp. The car I am looking at has an STS system boosting 5psi, 6speed with 4.10s (will probably replace), spec 3+ clutch, tial BOV & wastegate, 42# injectors, walbro 255 fuel pump, NO intercooler or boost controller. He said the turbo is an upgrade to the 60? From the current setup, what would really be needed to make around 450-500whp? Should I just throw a cam in there and keep it at 5psi? Or should I leave the stock cam and up the boost to around 7psi? Car currently makes around 380rwhp on a mustang dyno, so about 400-420rwhp dynojet. So what would be needed to make this kind of power safely? it seems like it has mostly everything that I can think of so far, but could use better valve springs...

If it's just a single 60-1 don't look forward to that turbo making much more power. Otherwise, intercool it and turn up the boost a bit, just don't assume 42.5lbers will take you far past 500whp safely.

make sur you have the sock off yhe filter when you dyno that is good for another 20 to 30 horse on the dyno definatly get an intercolller or meth injection needs to be done i was boosting 8lbs on stock motor with no intercoller making about 440 with intercooler i could have gotten it to 460 but heads and cam would be great idea. I blew my head gasket so I decided to build a forged motor and boost 10 to 12lbs. hopefully with the intercooler i am adding i can reach 550 or so.

Ah yeah it was pretty hard to lose but I'm lucky everything went ok, just in the market for another one...it's tough only driving around a little turd beater without a fun car to take out when I get home!

I was wondering since at 5spi right now making around 400-420whp if I just went ahead and added a nice turbo cam I could get to around 450whp just at 5spi w/o an intercooler? But I have heard some people say an intercooler is needed and some say it's not too important unless you're boosting over 7psi...I know it will help but just not sure if it's absolutely necessary right away?

The turbo upgrade should be a GT-67.
You don't need an intercooler at 5 p.s.i. Anything above that and your IATs get too high, unless you go with methanol injection, which will cool it back down.

It's probably not an upgrade then since its the 60, still seems like a decent turbo and should be able hit my goals with a cam. Will most likely just stay with 5psi until I feel the ned for more power and then I will shell out the cash for an intercooler and possibly meth injection but it will be a street car so just looking to have a fun, fast, and reliable car for the weekends.

myself, i would put an intercooler on there... if this is a street car your intake temps will get warm quick without one. you should be able to hit your goals with 5 psi and a cam, and still be safe, but i would def put an i/c on soon

I believe this STS Camaro is still for sale. It would be a great deal as there is a lot of work and money put into it. Bob

A good intercooler will help you towards your goal. Need to dumb-down the gear ratio for sure. 3.08's would be ideal. Wrap the exhaust from the y-pipe back if it's not already done. If the car is still running the MAF, ditch that for a 2-bar SD setup.

That alone will get you close. A boost-friendly cam (like a ZO6 cam or a CC228 on a 115LSA) will work wonders.

BTW, I made 453RWHP/432RWTQ SAE on my old STS set at 5PSI and a 11.1 to 0 AFR. Had over 400RWTQ from 3500RPM till 5700RPM

Thanks for the advice. Sounds like some good ideas for me. Will 4.10s be ok for awhile??? I kind of wanted to see how they work lol

Not really on a budget per say, looking for a good deal on a car before winter, or else I will plan on getting something after winter...I guess if I had to pick a budget for right now I would say under $15k...

Yes, but your IATs will be high, 140 range. Your PCM may pull timing. Your best bet is to spend the extra $$ and get a methanol injection kit. It is not that expensive.

Should I just run the meth kit without an intercooler? Which would help lower the IAT temps the most? Who sells a good meth kit and also an intercooler since TRT is out of business now?

I have the Snow Performance stage 2 kit. I am sure sponsors sell it. The intercooler requires that you put a large gaping mouth on the front of the car; something I am unwilling to do.

Yeah but it does look pretty good on some that I have seen...just gotta take out the grille! So a mth kit without and intercooler seems to work well for you? You also have an STS kit?
