Default GAINS WITH SWAPPING OUT MY CURRENT CAM??

I've been reading posts lately about a few blower cars swapping in bigger cams to replace their smaller cam....and have seen 50rwhp + gains....

Once again its got me thinking that I've should of done this before I had my motor assembled....

My 6.0L 372 c.i. motor currently has a 214/218 .540/.550 114lsa comp cam in it.....its going to see around 12-13psi, and going to be tuned on 100 octane....the most I see it putting down on this setup is somewhere in the 550rwhp range........

What gains would be had by swapping to a larger duration cam like a 230/244 .570/.580(not sure on the lift) 114lsa, with some advance ground in.....

Would this change allow me to make power power with less boost, I assume that by increasing the duration that much would let some cylinder pressure bleed off..

Opinions Please...

To update on the car:
I've put 600+ miles on the new motor while waiting for PSJ's car to get finished so I can get a bracket fabbed up...I'm still on the same blower belt that I had when I got out of Speed Inc.
Looking for more power....

Yes definitely. Stick with 114LSA. I think you will see a HUGE difference. seriously....

cheers
Chris

ps- Keep the lift numbers sensible for the sake of the springs. (FI puts more stress on springs to begin with) I would stay around .560-.570 lift as well.

When you swap the cam be sure to retune on the dyno with wideband. Play careful attention to timing as well as AF. With the bigger cam you can really see big gains from timing changes.

One other thing I forgot that you are over 370 ci. I would go even bigger on the cam as the added cubes will swallow up some of the lope

I would consider something in the 236/244 range on 114LSA and a few degrees advance ground in. It will be an animal especially where you run a TH400 and brake.

My guess is well over 50RWHP gain through your non-lockup tranny after tuning.

Thanks Chris, those are very similar specs to the G5X2 aren't they...

I could do a 236/244 .560/.570 114lsa with 2 degrees ground in....

More opinions please...

"236/244 range on 114LSA"

Where will that peak on a blower car?

Where are folks making peak HP on big cam blower cars?

Thats another thing I'm wondering, I will spin it close to 7000, but nothing over....how many degress of advance would it take to get it to the 6800 range?

That seems like a good cam too, the lift is high, but the duration is alright..

If I make this cam change I want to pick the right cam, I don't want to be kicking my self in the *** if I get this installed, and lose power and boost...

Too small Vince

He is 372 ci.

Both blower cars I have owned have peaked lower with the blower not 500rpm higher like PSJ has stated. Where did you get that info PSJ? I have never heard that before (Not to say it doesnt happen at higher boost)

That 236/244 114LSA cam in your car should peak around ~6500 with a couple degrees advance in it. If you are spinning to 7K rpm you have no worries at all

LT1 = different from LS1 Chris.

I'd like to see a blower car do a cam like that so I can see where it peaks.

You forget I had blown LS1 too Both were the same with the peak actually a little lower than what the cam would indicate.

I don't know about throwing in a "monster" cam, but definitely something bigger than what you have now. I remember a few people recommending you upgrade your cam before.
DO it and don't look back!

But dont forget he has TH400 with brake and a 3500 stall converter.

I would think a cam that gives the most area under the curve from 4000-7000rpm would be the best for him given his setup. Once he is 10 feet out he wont see under ~4700rpm for the whole 1/4...

I pretty much agree with everything you said except the whole lope part. Sure it sounds cool and all and its a good thing for a car trying to make power n/a. But when dealing with a s/c lope is not your friend especially when thats something you want. When you have alot of lope you will have alot of overlap. Excessive overlap means all your expensive boost going out the exaust. the less overlap the more power you'll make on boost.

What would be an ideal bigger cam that wouldn't cost me boost, but put more power to the ground??
Remember, I want to make a choice that I'm not going to have to go back and change again, I'm swapped enough cams w/the history of the car...

I want this one to do the job...

Supersize yoru cam, but pick your cam with minimized overlap (preferably nil). The overlap between your intake and exahaust will just blow boost right out the exhaust (read less power), as was said above. Get a larger cam, but be sure to line up your Intake / Exhaust / LSA so as to have little or no overlap.

So I would want to keep the durations and lifts close...so maybe a 236/238 .560/.570 114lsa with some advance, or can I go bigger, like 238/240

Or what about the Speed Inc. shop car cam

226/234 .598/.599 117lsa
