Default I'm unable to pump gas in my gastank!

I have a 2002 Camaro Z28, 6 speed. has a 402 ci LS2 stroker.

Anyway, I went to the gas station a couple days ago and I am unable to pump gas from the gas pump nozzle to inside my gas tank. It does not accept any gas and the gas just spills out, when I try to pull the gas pump nozzle trigger(or whatever the proper name is).

before I go on any further I would like to mention that for about 3 - 4 years, my camaro had always given me an issue when I would pump gas. The nozzle-lip seems like it wouldnt seal all the way properly and the gas pump trigger would just stop working(pumping gas)..So I would have to put pressure on it or move the nozzle around a bit, in order for it to seat properly and pump gas that way. and It got real irritating after a while.

So maybe the car always had an issue with it holding a tight seal, thus not allowing the gas to pump properly and now its just too worn to allow any gas to enter or something of that nature?.

I have concluded that there is either a restriction in the gas tank, or somehow the pump nozzle is not sealing and not allowing fuel to go down to my gas tank.

But anyway, Im unsure why this is happening and was wondering if anyone knew why this issue was occuring and what i can do to fix it.

thanks.

I'm going to attempt to take a stab at this. Your tank might not be bleeding off the excess air pressure properly. I know in my car I get a small woosh of air on hot days when I take my cap off. You might be onto something about a restriction in the filler neck or something. Just a wild guess I have never heard of anyone with this problem before.

I have the exact same issue with mine. I constantly have to adjust the handle and apply slight pressure just to get it to fill. I am unable to lock the handle during filling up. I hope I do not get to the point where I am unable to out gas in.

Im looking now with a flashlight, and the metal tongue/flap that is supposed to stay closed, is stuck open.

there also appears to be gas in the tube going to the gas tank, even though my gas tank is on empty.

Well Im glad Im not the only one with a similar problem I just got a 2000 z28 a few months ago this is the most annoying problem ever I have found one gas station that will let me pump gas at full flow and it has a older style nossle it doesnt have the newer style with the accordion looking thing that captures vapors. Ima look into this some more if there is anybody in the houston area I could look at there car also maybe make some comparisons. It sucks when I have to fill it up

You are on the right track with your problem. I just wanted to add that these cars all have a problem with ease of fueling. Every F-body I've been around has to have the nozzle moved around a bit to be able to keep the pump on Auto. It 100% is not going to happen if you cram the whole nozzle in and bottom it out. Most of the ones I've dealt with you have to pull the nozzle back out nearly half way. So no, they are not inherently easy to fuel in the best of circumstances. I've seen some people struggle at stations and it's quite funny.

looks a little nuts, but if you flip the nozzle/handle all the way upside down, and insert it that way, it can help filling. I would definitely check for restrictions or the vent.

I used to have a 3rd gen Camaro that I replaced the rearend and at the same time the gas tank and tweaked the filler neck ever so slightly when installing the new tank. Gas never would pump automatically after that. I would have to stand next to the car and hold the pump nozzle to keep it from shutting off.

In short, have you done ANYTHING to the tank or surrounding areas? See if moving the filler neck a tad helps. Just a thought and some of my own experiences.

Evap system was clogged.. I have a slit cut for the fuel pump, So I just peeled it back and took one of the hoses off that goes to the charcoal cannister. and it was able to breathe.. I went to fill gas, and it worked!

So, I am going to leave the hose disconnected and just run a breather on it.

at least this as a temporary solution..
