Default Racetronix pump and hotwire kit install & c5 regulator/fuel filter

I finally got around to installing my 225lph racetronix fuel pump and hotwire kit along with the ws6store c5 fuel filter/regulator on my 1998 camaro with a cammed 5.3l. My car was losing fuel pressure immediately after the key turn so I def had something going on with the pump or regualtor so i figured i would just redo it all. I have posted pics of the install. I am not showing 70 psi of fuel pressure at the rail with a rail mounted gauge. The AFR seems to be fine based on AEM wideband. I will need to get a tune soon so i dont think the psi will be an issue.

Install went good. The car already had the trap door in it so made it a little easier. The C5 regulator kit was a little more of a pain but I was able to get it in ok.

FYI racetronix i know you do not recommend the trap door install of your pumps. The proper install is to pull the tank and properly clean the tank prior to installing the pump. That is the proper way to try and maintain you warranty. The install I have listed will void you warranty.

Here is a vid, seem rich at idle but this is cold start up and still in open loop. When in closed loope it goes to 14.7 area with a little fluctuation. This vid was also prior to the hotwire kit install. 70 psi is showing after hotwire kit.

You've got me curious about your setup.

I'm doing a very, very similar setup, but its on an LS swap in a 1st gen using a 99+ bucket assembly in the 69 tank. I'm using the bucket assembly, (pump is still TBD, thats another story though) with the stock regulator removed and I'm running the vette regulator/filter, mainly just to simplify a T-junction for the return. Haven't been able to test anything yet, still in the building process.

Did you remove the regulator in the bucket? I'm sure you did but just can't tell from the pics. Seems awhile back I heard guys claiming you "shouldn't run the vette regulator with an OE bucket assembly, but I couldnt see why not, long as the factory regulator is removed. Has this vette regulator in a 4th gen setup been working okay for you?

Also, have you been happy with the racetronix unit? I'm looking at them but it seems like theres been almost a 1:1 ratio of love em/hate em on here. Their customer service just from me inquiring about there product has been.....interesting....thus far.

Thanks

There isnt enough room with the 99+ module compressed to run the vette filter/reg in the bucket.
You have to remove the in tank regulator if you are running any type of external/separate regulator.

Ha, that would be a funny "Gary, look at what this guy tried...." moment.
No no, I understand. It's going on the frame rail and the factory in-bucket regulator will be removed. Didn't mean to make it sound as though the vette fpr was going in the bucket.

I guess I was just more curious if the IPs high pressure and possible overfueling issue seemed like it was caused by using the vette regulator on a 4thgen sending unit, or if it was more likely the racetronix...or neither.

Ive seen them usually at 60 to 62. It really seems to vary based off the filter assy itself.
I am looking over a few kits to see if there are any actual issues that could be causing this outside the filter.

I did remove the stock regulator on the sender assy in the tank. The only thing on the return line in the tank the supplied hose in the kit that slides on the hard line where the regulator mounted. I am very pleased with the racetronix kit. I feel like the bang for the buck factor was great. My car is nothing crazy and it was nice to get a fairly straight forward system at a I feel is a great price. I honestly don't drive the car much but as I have put some miles on it i have noticed the pressure at the rail has started to drop and come more in line around 60-65 psi. This is again through a fluid filled permanent gauge mounted at the rail, def not the most accurate device.

That is a pretty pump housing shame to hide it in the tank.

Doesn't look like the new return hose will be putting the fuel back into the bucket and that might reduce how low you can run your tank without issues.

Glad to see someone finally post the filter installed. I had guessed part of the install wrong from just looking at the kit. I don't like those clip on adapter to an fittings. Russel makes ones that thread on and won't pop off.

A hose is included with the kit specifically to direct the return fuel into the module. since the 340 pump does not have a venturi this is the best work around we could find so far. it does work pretty well based off testing.

It funny you say that about the pump bc i was thinking the same thing when i was installing it. Ive seen many external in-line pumps that looked like crap compared to the housing on the racetronix kit.

I see the hose and it just looks short. When I did mine I ran a hose longer than stock so it not only goes into the bottom of the bucket, but also lays on the bottom pointed away from the pump and that way any air bubbles that might end up in line have time to separate before the pump can draw it in. His is still above the pump. I can't remember how much that bent to know if it's at the right angle to still shot to the bucket though.

Other note. It's tough paying $20 a foot for that in tank hose.

Exactly, the only other nice looking one I can think of is the A1000 and it's not that nice. The Walbro 392 is a solid, but ugly pump.

The 98 setup is quite a bit differenr from the 99-02. Basically the only reason the "bucket" is there is for holding everything together. Its hinged because it basically sits on an angle, not upright. It originally plumbed the "return hose" to the filter sock on the pump. That sock setup doesnt come from racetronix and iirc isnt available by itself anyway (or we would use it). The hose seems short there but his routing does take up a little length as well. If you want a longer hose (no pun intended) we can include one. we have them up to 140mm i believe. They are only a few dollars more if that.

This install pic shows the 1998 set up better. No bucket at all.

The funny thing about the return line is on the racetronix instructions is advises to route the return line looping upward on the sender assy. This as stated above I believe is due to the quirkyness of the 1998 tank in that the sender assy is angled in the tank.

My 98 has a bucket in the back of the tank and I made sure my return still went into that bucket. I didn't think to take a picture of it and I didn't take a picture of my return hose either.

Aftermarket modules have a "bucket" but its no more than just a housing. since the module sits at an angle in the tank it cannot really hold fuel for the most part and only really acts as a prefilter housing.

Thanks for the pictures of the installed C5 filter/regulator. I have been looking for a photo of that for 3 days.
