does anyone know of any good fuel additives that are worth while and will not harm my 01 camaro z28, such as fuel injector cleaner? Or are all fuel additives crap

Most modern fuels have detergents in the gasoline itself, which generally are enough to help keep the fuel system clean. But, once in a while I use the Chevron brand cleaner called Techron. This is designed for fuel injected vehicles and is the only additive I will ever pour in the gas tank. It's considered one of the better ones out there.

alright thanks what about redline water wetter, it suppose to lower your engine temp by up to 20 degrees. Does this really work and are their big advantages to this?

I dont think you can use that with dexcool. Plus the engines only gonna run as cold as the thermostat allows.

This quote is from the Redline Oil website, regarding Water Wetter:

"WaterWetter® is a unique wetting agent for cooling systems which reduces coolant temperatures by as much as 30ºF. This liquid product can be used to provide rust and corrosion protection in plain water for racing engines, which provides much better heat transfer properties than glycol-based antifreeze. Or it can be added to new or used antifreeze to improve the heat transfer of ethylene and propylene glycol systems. Designed for modern aluminum, cast iron, copper, brass and bronze systems. Compatible with all antifreezes, including the latest long-life variations."

I use it and it works. It helped remove 25 degrees from both my hot rod and Mercedes, and 20 for my little truck. I also use it in my dirt bike (Yam 450F). Since I'm in NorCal, I also use distilled water with Water Wetter, with no antifreeze, since water is a better coolant anyway. The Wetter has anti-corrosion stuff in it so I don't worry about the lack of antifreeze. In the truck, which does go to the mountains sometimes (where it freezes), I run 30% antifreeze with the water and WWetter.

I also like and use the Redline SL1 fuel system cleaner. It is a strong detergent. I have used this in a bunch of cars to good effect. My friend's Jetta seemed particularly prone to dirty injectors, and a bottle of SL1 always helped a lot. I use it once a year in all my vehicles, and a little in each tank for the hot rod (blown, injected 383) and the dirt bike.

I have found no other additives that were worth any of my money, including ALL "octane boosters". Plus "3 points" my ***. They mean .3!!! Not worth a dime.

Numerically, hasn't "X points" always meant point some number? As far as octane boosters, with my turbo Harley, when I can't find 92 octane, Orielly's octane booster works well at $2.99 per bottle.

Up until a couple 3 years ago I believed, like I am sure they want you to believe, that a product (for example) called "104 Octane" would boost your octane by a bunch of WHOLE numbers, like from 91 to 96, or if you follow their directions, even 104!

Then I found out about their definition of 'points'.

The really good octane boosters were the analine family, but they are so illegal now you could never find them retail. You had to wear special gloves because if it got on your skin it was very poisonous, like even a drop.

I haven't heard about Orielly's so I can't comment. It is probably a MMT (Methylcyclopentadienyl Manganese Tricarbonyl) or one of the light aromatics like toluene/Benzene or a blend of the 2. What's the can say? Sometimes it's just methanol and kerosene.

Try making your own race gas or real octane booster: 1 gallon of Toluene plus 2 oz. of Marvel Mystery Oil or 1 oz. ATF for topend lubrication. In your Harley you could add a 1/4 gallon of that mix to your tank. Anywhere outside Cal and maybe New York toluene is cheap at Kelly Moore Paint Stores or (less cheap) at Home Depot or a major HW store.

Toluene is high octane (rated at 114, with the normal US pump (R+M)/2 rating) and is commonly blended with gas to make premium fuel.

Here's a link with more info: http://www.elektro.com/~audi/audi/toluene.html

Jim, thanks for the info. When we travel by bike, rather then carry alot of octane booster, I just keep a spare can of it and then find an O'riellys if needed. My wife packs too much of her junk rather then my important stuff.

Hey, im trying to revive the forum. Today i saw an octane booster made by NOS, that claimed to raise the octane 60 points, but its like 8dollars a bottle. Do you think it could really raise it from 93 to 99?

Also If i did raise my octane to 99 do you think I could run a faster quarter mile time?

All additives are not crap. Additives are often necessary since some gasoline lacks sufficient detergency. A few years ago the EPA came out with new gasoline standards. Ironically, most gasolilne manufacturers exceeded those standards and as a result began to manufacture gasoline with less detergent. As a result, the top tier ranking was created by some of the car manufacturers. Do a google search for more information.

Long story short, I use Fuel Power 60 to keep my injectors clean. It have also gotten about 2mpg extra from using it.

You might also want to check out the additive section of www.bobistheoilguy.com for more discussion about the value of Fuel Power 60 and how it works. I have no connection with the manufacturer whatsoever.

Thanks alot for the good info, that fuel power 60 looks like some good stuff i think i might give that a try.

Now Does anyone know if raising the octane to 99 on a stock engine make my quarter mile time anyfaster????

I also saw a product in the store that says it give you an instant 25 hp, how are companies allowed to say that cause it sounds like complete bullshit to me.

From what I know higher octane doesn't boost power at all, it just resist detonation better. Unless you're suffering from knocking there's not much need for higher octane.

The lack of antifreeze was the biggest cause of your temperature drop. Try measuring the difference in temps when the ONLY thing that has been added is the WaterWetter and the coolant remains the same...

I agree with everything you said about the octane boosters 100%.

And as far as the fuel injector cleaners go, Suppose the 'cleaner' does knock some crud loose... Where is the crud going to go when it gets to the injector filter basket? (The fuel filter is in the back of our cars, It can only catch the crud that is behind it, NOT the crud in front of it)

Just some stuff to think about guys...
