Default Fuel Efficiency

Considering the rising necessity of fuel efficient carts what's going on with E85? Can E85, 85% ethanol, 15% alcohol actually alleviate the oil crisis. I was also wondering about Nitrous, many use it for power boosts but is there a way to use it along with gasoline to improve fuel efficiency? Since it's so common for power, is nitrous just completely impractical in this application?

All nitrous does is introduce more oxygen into the intake, requiring more gas to maintain proper AFR(N2O... 33 1/3% oxygen, Air... 21% oxygen), thus making more power. Not a good idea for economy.

I'm hoping for a surge of ethanol-powered cars... just give OPEC a HUGE pay cut.

Adding 0.2% pure acetone to each tank will help mpg while slightly improving power. What it does is change the surface tension of the fuel. It also cleans the fuel lines and tank and carbon off the engine.

For diesels - add 0.147% to each tank.

My results were on a turbo diesel: power gain immediately - can now take a major climb in 5th gear that used to require 4th gear and rpms in the max hp zone.

mpg only went up 1mpg (I set baselines over a few 1000km so it's pretty accurate) at first. Then after 3350miles of doing it - enjoying the power gain more than the slight mpg - bam - the carbon had gone and the fuel was able to burn a lot better so up another 5.5mpg. That's 6.5mpg increase on averege per tank ever since. When people say it does not work - I just laugh. Try it and be patient.

Torquemonster, that is very interesting. If you say it works, I must try it. I always like the idea of getting rid of excess carbon anyways. Where do you go to get acetone?

Where do you get acetone...?

I believe it causes no damage to plastic/rubber parts, am I right...?

yeah... that sounds pretty damn interesting... Would it the increase be any different with a little more or less acetone? I'd like to try this on my DD.

It needs to be 100% pure acetone. It is most easily found at beauty supply stores, and you are advised not to buy acetone at a drugstore. Even if the acetone is labeled 100% pure check to make sure it does not contain Benzoate. Benzoate is a chemical that reduces vaporization, which is the complete opposite of what we want for good combustion. I've been reading a lot about acetone lately and I'm pretty sure I'm going to try it in my LS1. It creates a cleaner more efficient burn because acetone burns slower than gas and completes the combustion better as the cylinder expands. This leads to more power, better mileage and cleaner emmisions. Here's a great page about it. http://www.lubedev.com/smartgas/additive.htm

Ah crap. Just searched further and found the big thread about this subject. My bad. I still think it sounds real good though and anyone interested should check out that site and the thread about it. The only possible negative I foresee is increased engine wear.

If you try the Acetone please post results. I have been interested in doing this for awhile but never hard-up enough to try it!!

As for the Ethanol. The problem I see with Ethanol is that it is a major component is gas tank dryers, right? Ethanol absorbs water. Well, storage conditions might result in you getting a tank of water/ethanol when you fill up. I don't know how gas stations have their fuel pickups set up but hey it could happen.

Never got anything good out of it in the 3 vehicles i tried it on. It's some strong stuff, keep it off your paint.

acetone does work, you must realize that using it and our engines involves a lot of thermodynamics. using acetone with our engines is thermodynamics

you must research and find out percentages that you can use in your car based on temperatures and what not, as acetone has certain characteristics; as does gas

It is recommended to use 2.5 to 3 oz. per 10 gallons of gas. Now would an LS1 require a little less than that since I can only assume an LS1 runs hotter than most engines? Either way I think 2.5 oz. per 10 gallons is a pretty safe bet. I can't see the thermodynamics of the engine making more than a 0.1 oz. difference and this amount would probably be miscalculated in your measuring anyway.
