Default K&N-Smooth Bellows=bad milage

Ever since I put the K&N filter and smooth bellows in my gas milage has gone to hell, what could be the problem? Should I have it tuned? I am going to be putting L/T's on soon (within the next few weeks) and would rather not have to spend the money twice to have it tuned. Any help would be great.

Did you put in an oil-dripping K&N that then
coated your little MAF wires with crud?

Does the bellows fit well, without any leaks?

I've heard of over oiled K&N's fouling plugs up real quick.

I have not noticed any leakage but then again I haven't done any checks for it.

the filter has only been in the car for about a week and 1/2, I didn't oil it because it came oiled.

Dude, you are probably driving harder to test your mods. LOL
I've never heard of K&N oil fouling plugs. How much oil is on a filter anyway? Before my FIPK< I used to have a lid and a K&N filter. I would find deposit in the TB but never fouled plugs.
Stick a highly absorbant paper towel on both sides of your filter for a few minutes and it will absorb excess oil (Do that after cleanup and re-oiling also).
Also with more air and stock tune, it is possible that ur motor is running richer. Check A/F ratio.

Like I said, I installed it right from the packaging, it was preoiled and the wrapping was not all oily at all, if the MAF wires are fouled, how should I clean them? should I just wipe them down with a paper towel or should I use a cleaner as well?

You can take a q-tip soaked in alcohol & GENTLY rub the little wires & sensors on the MAF to clean them. VERY GENTLY...they're delicate!

As for the smooth bellows ruining your gas mileage, never heard of it. Maybe your K&N Filter is so short that your air box doesn't seal anymore. Mine was, and I had to fashion a new seal. But I also installed a Whisper Lid.

Not sealing will not cause bad gas mileage. However dirt will get in and mess up the engine at the long run.
Check ur A/F ratio. You could be running richer because your stock MAF,while reading more air will dump more fuel but does not advance. I do not have that problem with a HPP3 powertune since it increases the advance and compensate for the extra richness the MAF can give me.

OK, I replaced the stock MAF with a SLP maf and still bad milage. I travel 57 miles one way to work and eat a 1/4 tank of gas one way, what could be the issue. I don't have hpp3 or edit but was looking at buying LS1 Edit. Would this be the way to go or should I look at another avenue

Ok, I changed ouot the MAF with a 85mm SLP, and ensured that all connecting areas were tight and that seems to have taken care of the problem. Thanks for the tips.
