Default Replacing intank pump with an inline?

This is actually for my 98 chevy blazer with a 4.3 v6, but I thought the concept would be the same as for a 4th gen fbody.

The fuel pump is on the fritz, and instead of replacing it with another $300 in-tank unit, I was thinking it would be better if I could just put an inline fuel pump like this

Besides having to removing the pump from the old fuel pump basket unit and running a pickup hose in its place, is there any reason this wouldn't work? Does the fuel pressure regulator ensure that the fuel system wont be getting too high of pressure? The stock pump runs at pretty high PSI, around 60 I believe, but this pump is capable of 80 PSI.

Any input would be great

If you're paying 300, that's about 110 too much. Does your Blazer have an external regulator? If it doesn't, you will have to purchase one and that will add to the cost of an external pump setup.

You can buy cheaper pumps, but they tend to go out quickly. I bought one of the cheaper ones and about 8000 miles ago when i replaced it and its already crapping out. It has a fuel pressure regulator under the upper plenum of the manifold, I replaced it recently also, hoping it would fix my fuel pressure woes.

Starting to think that I should just buy a walbro 255 intank pump and put it in the normal setup. I'm selling the thing soon so as long as it lasts me awhile ill be happy.

Why not just throw a Walbro in there ?

EFI pumps dont suck very well, so they generally need to have a gravity feed of some sort.

So if you intend to install a pickup pipe that goes up and over, before it heads to the in-line, you may experience problems.

Yeah I decided to put a walbro in it instead. Im guessing in need the high pressure model since the blazer needs between 52 and 60# of pressure to run right?

All efi pumps could be classed as high pressure. Just use the typical 255lph pump everyone uses.

That "typical 255" Comes in several pressure versions 43-58.

You will not get the flow from the inline pump trying to pull fuel through the old pump. Do it right and replace the pump with the correct replacement pump.

That pressure as you know, is dictated by the fuel pressure regulator. Any efi pump that couldnt supply 60psi, would be scrap IMO

Just as a side note, an in-line pump will be significantly louder as well. Just replace the intank.
