Cool Heat Treated Ring and Pinion

I was told that the cause of Screaming from my new 9" rear end, was because the Ring and Pinion where not properly Heat Treated. Some of my friends are calling BullShit on it, does anyone know?

I suppose its possible. Do they mean heat cycled? Are the teeth galling? Either way there should be noticable wear or metal transfer on the ring or pinion if this was the case. It would create a seriously loud noise and rapid failure.

They werent "pro" gears were they?

The previous link with the problem https://ls1tech.com/forums/gears-axl...eaming-me.html. The gears only had about 15 miles on them before we had the whole center section sent out for inspection. The gear manufacturer did an analysis on the gears and said the heat treatment was the problem. They where EXTREMELY loud and I'm sure failure was right behind the corner. The gear manufacturer said to complete a 500 mile break in period before we sent them back but they were not going to make 500 miles in my opinion. So I had to eat the cost of shipping the center section around and they warrantied the gear. It sucked but now the rear end sounds great. So I guess that is money well spent

A screaming ring and pinion is the result of ONLY three things:
Incorrect setup from the start
Correct setup followed by incorrect breakin resulting in overheated gears (burned up)
Defective gears

FYI, pro gears were not meant for any type of street use, they will wear very quickly. If its a track only car then its perfectly fine. "Pro" gears have a lower rockwell rating to allow a higher shock load with out breaking, really only to be used for drag racing.

They didn't tell me that, they just said the Pro gear was softer and not as loud as a regular gear. It really doesn't see the road that much anyway. Are they going to be louder over the long run?

Do you know the brand of gears? US Gear makes a "pro street" gear wich may be why they called it a pro gear and its fine for street duty. A real "Pro" gear will cost about twice as much as a street gear (~$400)
