Default sweet tech tip 4 you 9 inch and 12 bolt guys

Ok well I installed a moser 9 inch in my 2000 trans am wich recuires a 1 inch longer driveshaft and 12 bolts require a 1 inch shorter driveshaft. well I looked around at prices and I cant afford a 400 driveshaft at the moment and I trusted a steel shaft over aluminum if it has to be a shorter shaft. So I picked up a steel shaft from a 96 and damn if the shaft itself wasnt a half inch longer than my aluminum one. So I measured the insert that goes into the transmision and found out the one on the aluminum one was a half inch longer than the one on the steel one. So once I swaped the snouts ($40 in u joints) I had my 1 inch longer shaft for my 9 inch and have a 1 inch shorted one that should work with a 12 bolt.

You mean a 12 bolt requires a stock length driveshaft don't you?

This wont work for everyone. Keep in mind if you have a lowered car, which majority here do, your length may be different yet. Always measure to be sure. But this is good info.

No he means 1 inch shorter in most cases but it depends on your set up. You can get by with 1/2 inch shorter with a 12 bolt. This will let you run that same DS on a 10 bolt and then a 12 bolt.

the snout on the aluminum driveshaft atleast the one on my 2000 trans am was a 1/2 inch longer than the snout on my 96 driveshaft. Also the driveshaft itself the aluminum one was a half inch shorter than the steel one so by swaping the snouts it gave me a 1 inch longer driveshaft than my stock aluminum one. And the aluminum one that now had the snout from a 96 was now 1 inch shorter.

2000 trans am driveshaft + 96 lt1 snout = 1 inch shorter than stock
96 driveshaft + 2000 trans am snout = 1 inch longer driveshaft

And transamsam98 that is good info! Although I am kind of scared of stock aluminum driveshafts after snapping one on regular street tires...

yes the stock will work with a u joint change but it is not inserted into the tranny as far as it is with a 10 bolt in it.
