Hey guys,
I'm waiting on a shim pack to come in the mail, and have a question. I've got 2 crush sleeves right now; but I want to mock up the gears to check the pattern with the current pinion shim.
Can I do this without installing the crush sleeve? Basically just set the preload to 15in-lb and check. I've got a setup bearing as well.
I'd just rather not burn through crush sleeves every time I need to adjust the pinion shim, not to mention they're also a bitch to crush.
Then once I get it right throw a new pinion nut/crush sleeve and put it all together and give it one last check.
Will that work?

Hey, sort of unrelated; but hate to start another thread... finally getting this sort of close to wrapped up. First time.
I have a good pattern, good pinion bearing preload; but my backlash is ~ .0065".
Running Motive Gears. I have an install kit I ordered and won't be in until Monday. I just hate to pull everything apart when pattern/preload/everything looks right on the money short of the backlash being .0015" too tight.
Any recommendations here? OK? or Wait for the shim kit?

Did you clean the compound off the ring gear and pinion after checking the patteren ?, that will give you a few thousandths. The pinion get coated pritty heave after checking the patteren

i just installed some Motive's at .006 backlash and they are quiet as a mouse even though Motive recommends .007-.009. i figured a tad tighter wouldnt hurt anything.

I guess I could take it on a short drive and see what it sounds like, if it seems too loud I could bump it up to .008". I'd prefer to be a little on the tight side for strength. This isn't a circle track/autox car.
And thanks for the tip about cleaning off the pinion. It's prob got a **** ton of Prussian Blue on it as I haven't sprayed it clean like the ring gear...
