gear noise question..

gear noise question..
Last year this time I had some motive performance 3:73's put in my car..After a month they were grinding like a school bus. I took the car back to the install place and they said there was a bolt that came loose.1st of course they tried to pin it on me. So they had the car for 3 days and fixed it. It had some whine before, but now after they fixed it,its whines on decel and around 30-40 mph, plus now it sounds like there is a wind leak in the hatch, but its the gears..What is that all about? I'm going to have my mechanic at work take the cover off tomorrow and inspect it.

everyone told a guy i know that whine on decel was the pinion bearing. i have heard of people getting whines after gear installs and a hard launch and finding the pinion nut has back off slightly giving the pinion bearings more play then they should have. i would pull it apart and check that everything is within spec.

No, ive never really believed that. Everyone says richmonds are supposed to whine because of one thing or another but ive installed 3.08s and 4.11s in my old 69 and neither of them whine. The most i got was from the 4.11 and it was a faint hum at 2600rpm cruising.

The shop told me it was the best they could get it. They said it was going to whine unless I got a new carrier and GM 3:73's. I don't know if I buy that..I have a 99 TA,it had 2:73's. They told me not to use synthetic gear lube. After the 2nd time they adjusted them, now there is a light grinding type noise in the back ,almost like the hatch has a leak and I know that's not the case..

Pretty much, if gears never whined from the factory they shouldn't whine when you replace them.
I never use synthetic in anything except the motor. They might have to reshim the carrier sounds like.

Hmm.. What I think the real problem is..Is that the shops all stick with one brand. They do gears one way and if there is anything diff they screw up..Then they cover their *** by saying its going to whine because they are performance gears which I find is bullshit..They just aren't that good at it.

+1 on the shop. My friend has motives in his 94 and they dont whine. He had a local shop put em in and they did a good job setting them up. I check the backlash when we did the oil just for ***** and giggles.

I'm going to have my mechanic pull the cover off in a min and look,I'll look too,and put fresh fluid in it. I just think some of these shops are hacks. They work with on type of car and are pro's but when it comes to something diff they don't know the nuances of the job..

Well,we had my car up in the air and it had a tiny rear seal leak. Gears looked good,no shavings,We put Lucas synthetic back in and its quieter. Quite a bit actually, but not near gone. The pinion nut seemed to be tight. It still whines on decel, and around 30-40..

Hey guys just got done reading this thread and i was just wondering is synthetic fluid bad for the rear end? Obviously they advertise it to be better than stock but iv never had to change the rear fluid. Should i refrain from using it?

Depends on what your running.. If you have an auburn posi you don't use synthetic, but if you have a torsen you can.. I use syn in mine and it does quiet it down a little. I have the thick gear, went from 2:73 to 3:73 and they said that's why it whines..I'm no pro,so I'm not sure if its true or not..
