Default Breaking rear ends with what sized tires?

What tire size and power levels are the 10 bolt rears holding up to? Most of the stories about breakage I've heard are with slicks on a track. Is there anyone breaking them with small factory 8" tires? How about on the 9.5"? Or the 11" ZR1's?

I'd like to go to a set of black ZR1 wheels (9.5 front 11 rear) but I'm worried about my rearend.

My car is an M6 with 3.73 gears. '98 Z28.

I saw the picture of that firebird in GMHTP pulling a wheel with slicks on a stock axle, but that was with an auto.

The car is driven hard, but it will never see slicks, I don't care much for 1/4 mile times. When I've been on the track, its always been with full weight, full pressure in the tires, and no thought toward the amount of gas in the tank. I haven't been to the track in this car yet, I'll have to wait till next spring as the track has closed. Hoping for low 13's.

The car is pretty stock now (gears, filter, hypertech), but that'll be changing a little in the next few months (LS1 edit, lid, FTRA), and then come April it'll be modded a bit more with headers and an ORY with a cutout. I have to wait for e-check, else I'd do it sooner.

So the real question is: will a modded Z28 with an M6 on 11" rear wheels with street tires destroy a 10 bolt rear?

Its all luck with the stock rear. I've seen bone stock M6 cars break it with street tires (mostly dr's and slicks) and ive seen modded M6s running et streets for years with no prob. Most everything says its gonna break if you run it hard. Especially with stickies, but on street tires your gonna buy yourself some time with it. JMO.

Good luck, its a 50/50 shot.

Still not sure what I'm gonna do. I have a friend who can get me a bolt in 12 bolt for $900, I guess I'll go that route before the wheels/tires.

Probably the biggest factor on what kind of abuse the rear will stand up to is if you have an auto or a manual. My auto has seen multiple 1.5x sixtys at the track with ET streets, while a guy I know that has an M6 broke his stock axle on regular tires having never even used anything other than street tires. Another tip for avoiding axle breakage is to stay away from wheel hop. It's hard on a lot of parts.

i would go with that if it's in good condition, seeing as how it's from a friend i imagine it is. as far as 10 bolt's, it seems to be hit and miss with them. i've been reading posts about how well 10 bolts hold or dont hold up and some people break them on a bare sotck car with stock tires, and i remember this one guy said he had 26" et streets i believe and had really hard launches with an m6 and his lasted for him and others have done nearly the same things with good results. do a search and you'll have loads of info about it and you'll probably see the guy that i'm talking about. hope that may have been a little help.

I broke mine twice on street tires in the street. Mine is an m6 with a stage 3 clutch. I'm pretty sure its the clutch.

It just seems hit and miss with the 10 bolts.

For $900, I don't think I can really go wrong springing for a 12 bolt.

I raced a entire season with my 10 bolt and dr's when I had boltons. I cut 1.7's all year long and a 1.60! Then over the summer my 10 bolt bit the dust on a launch off idle with the H/C
