I know the detroit locker is probably a bit overboard and more then I would need ...

I would assume the Eaton is definately worth the extra cash over the auburn unit correct?

still seen the eaton break the spider gears.

for what its worth, your spending the cash now, get the best and that way you wont have to do it again.

The detroit locker is gear operated, not clutch operated correct? so i will have clunking going around corners and such?

I've never heard it before ... what type of sound does it make? Is it obnoxiously loud?

My 10-bolt is whining (suspect pinion bearing). I make 381 rwhp, go tothe track maybe 2 times per year. It may see ET Streets once in awhile, but will ostly be on Nittos. Any idea which of these three would be best. I doubt I need to go all the way to a 9 inch, but its worth considering.

Sounds like the 8.8 is the way to go. It can be had for cheaper than a 12 bolt and is just as strong with excellent pricing on parts for the 8.8. I hate Ford but I am going to get the 8.8 rear. I just won't tell anyone or admit to having a Ford product on my car.

good idea.
I'm trying to do my own. Got the 10 bolt, got the 8.8 housing, got the H-D FMS 31 spline 8.8 track loc carrier($150 from a bud). Next is the 4.10's($120 from a bud), bearing/install kit($89 from D&D). Setup of the gears may be done by a local ford guru for $100-$150. Finally, axles will, I'm told, be around $250 having the 31 spline carrier end and stock 10 bolt wheel end.

This thread is a Godsend. I got in a HUGE argument with my wife last night because I told her I need to blow 2k+ on a new rear to mate up with my new H/C package. I just spent big bucks upgrading my 346.

She said we don't got no 2k anyhere, even on credit card limits. (She also said other things.)

I'm going to look into an 8.8 because I have a friend who's got a jig and can work magic with his extensive drag racing background. My problems may be solved; boneyards now fear me!

I want to support our sponsors, but I just sent 4k+ their way so I don't feel as guilty.

.
I want to support our sponsors too, but none of them have what we want. Everytime I have a choice to buy from a sponsor or from some other place, I chose the sponsor, even if their prices are slightly higher.

I'm cutting some brackets out of mild steel and having them welded to the left side 8.8 stub. If you look at that fellows site that sells the bolt in 8.8 hybrids for Fbodys, you can see what he's done. All I'll do is measure my stock 10 bolts attachment point for the torque arm and make the brackets conform to them. I'm creating a jig to hold it all in so everthing will line up for welding. I'll put in my 10 bolt and get the jig setup up correctly. Then I'll put on the 8.8 pumpkin/10 bolt legs and get it all put in place. I have a MIG welder available for setting up the jig. After all looks good, I'll take the pieces and the jig to my TIG welder.

If I had to do it over again, I would of gone the 9" route. I spent close to $2300 with for my 12 bolt and sold my old 10 bolt for $300.

Somebody posted what he did and it made the most sense.

Buy 9" axle housing, shafts and TCS/ABS hardware from Moser: $1100
Buy 9" 3rd member complete with gears and locker on ebay: $375
Total................... $1475

Just sounds like a better way IMO plus I think its a stronger setup than the 12.

I think it can be broken down like this.....

8.8 for everyday driving, somtimes track use
9" for alot of track use and limited daily driving

I think I will opt for the 8.8......Just never seen that many issues with a Ford rear end.....
