to the guy up top that said you can use pretty much any 8.8 except for the explorer, that may be true if you're planning on using the stock axles. but the explorer 8.8 used 31 spline and some came with 4.10s and tracloc and the 2002 ranger fx4, the 03-06 off road level 2, and the 07+ fx4's used 31 spline 4.10's and trutrac diff's from the factory. if you find somebody parting out one of these ranger's for these years jump on it, cuz more then likely they dont know the difference and what kind of treasure they are selling for us f-body guys. i came across a couple already for a couple hundred so you have the diff and gears out of the way already, all you have left is to get moser to make some custom axles with gm bolt patterns and weld up the 10 bolt tubes and you have a virtually indestructible rear end.

I used a 98 ford explorer rearend, I removed and cut the lh tube. used a new rh axle in my now shortened lh tube. makes it same width as a stang. plus they have biggerbrakes, axles and tubes. im leaving it narrowed and doing a mini ladder bar. tucking 325 50 15s.

Does anyone know what the length of the T/A is? I talked to Maximum Motorsports a few weeks ago. They said the T/A is roughly 47 inches but I don't know where it's being measured from. The guy said he has never heard of anyone using their T/A for this put should be simple. He said they will sell just the T/A separately.

There is a vent tube in the pass side axle tube or you can drill and tap one up top.

Don't think there's one in the GM axles when the axles are welded to to the Ford 8.8. So, will have to drill & add one. Thanks

The MM TA will work great...trust, me I've got one on my car. You'll have to fab-up a new front TA crossmember (or modify the MM piece.) I modified the MM piece. You'll gain exhaust clearance, but lose about an inch of ground clearance (although you can regain it by using rear airbags and adjustable front coilovers.)

Here's my build:

Yes, the mid to late 90s Exploders and Mountaineers have 31-spline TrackLock carriers, in either 3.55, 3.73, or 4.11 gears. You can rebuild the TrackLock with the Ford Racing Kevlar/Carbon Fiber clutch packs that the blown IRS Cobras used.

If you intend to simply weld your 10-bolt axle tubes the Exploder/Mtneer axle tubes...think again. The truck 8.8 axle tubes are much larger diameter than the car 8.8 axle tubes. If you really want to use the truck 8.8 housing, you'll have to fab up some sleeves for the tubes...and mounting the torque arm will be much more difficult. You're much better off using the 31-spline TrackLock carrier from a truck, and using a car 8.8 housing. You can taper the 10-bolt axle tubes, grind down the internal seam on the car 8.8 axle tubes, and then press the the 10-bolt tubes right into the car 8.8 tubes.

Exactly right. The mid to late 90s Exploders/Mtneers have 31-spline carriers. Most of them used the TracLock limited slip, as well. You'll be able to tell, because there will be an "L" on the gearing tag between the numbers. For example, 3L73 is a TracLock with 3.73 gears. 3 73 would be an open diff with 3.73 gears. These trucks had either 3.55, 3.73, or 4.11 gears. 3.73s are the most common; 3.55s the least common; 4.11s right in the middle.

No SRA mustangs (28-spline) have 4.11 gears.

I would not re-use your stock axles; the c-clip thickness is different on the Fords vs the Chevy, as well as a minor length difference on the c-clip end of the axle.

I was told the 8.8 and 7.5 flanges are the same but the truck /explorer ones may be different is this true?
If you want to use a 1350 u-joint, You need the flange yoke from the Exploder/Mtneer and the following parts:

1350 Flange Yoke:

PCN-447 U-JOINT to convert from the F-body to the 1350.

What type of shop would be able to press in the 10 bolt axle tubes and verify they are straight on the 8.8 housing?

Honestly, I tapered the edges of the 10-bolt tubes with a grinder and pressed the tubes in with an oversized hydraulic press; pressing the axles in about 1/2" at a time, measuring, and then pressing again. I then had a professional race car chassis/rear-end shop make sure the tubes were straight and install the gears. I used Bill Buck Race Cars in Austin, TX. Bill is one of the most knowledgeable 8.8 builders in the nation, and is all around great guy. Any reputable chassis shop should be able to do the same thing.

has anyone figured out how to keep abs for us 3 series guys? If the reluctor rings have the same number of teeth wouldnt it work? (i counted both of the reluctor ring teeth from my old rear that had 2.73 and the 8.8 from an explorer and they both had 108 if i remember. plus the hole for the sensor is the same size.) So why wouldnt it work?

Would a ranger 8.8 with 28 spline work also ? As in will our axle tubes be able to be pressed in ? or do they have to have sleeves like the explorer rear end?

I'm really hoping to see an update on how to keep 3 channel ABS with the 8.8 or even with an 8.5 ten bolt Chevy conversion.

Bringing it back from the dead a little bit. But can someone give the ID of the mustang tubes and the OD of the 10 bolt tubes?? Cause its clear the explorer tubes dont fit, but the mustang tubes are definitely smaller. Cause if its confirmed I will need sleeves or something then I will just swap brackets cause I have a feeling I would pay a considerably amount to get sleeves made.
