Well I just measured my drive shaft because it is way too short for my new Ford 9. I measured from the very edge of the the U joint on the rear of the drive shaft to the edge of my 4L60E. I got 45 inches. Though I could not measure to the end of the yoke, because it is still in the tranny. I hope the helps.

I had the same question and have never been able to find a definitive answer.I get 42.5",41",45"...etc.
Does anyone have a stock LS/4L60 driveshaft sitting around that they can measure from the center of the front joint to center of the rear joint?

I just measured mine, it is for an A4. 47 and 3/4 inches. From tip to tip.

40 and 3/4 inches from the middle of the rear U joint to the middle of the Slip yoke U joint.

I am qurious as to why we ( several of us) are getting differant leights, some 41,41 1/2, 41 3/4 center of u joint to center of u joint,( I went back and chk again) I am sure we all are capable of reading a tape, please post up year and transmission. I thought all Z 28-SS a4 or 6 spd 98-02 were the same,. I could understand if we were checking a v 6 or other year models
as I stated on post # 4 my SS is 2000, a4 came stock with 3.23,bough new I helped unload it from the transport. Please post up and see if we can find a reason for the differant answers
>> Mr. OP I am sorry for steping on your post, but I would like to know that you are getting the correct answer

Being off .5 should not hurt anything. You want to make sure it cannot bottom out from being too long, and if it is too short it can cause a drivetrain vibration, and can cause what splines that are engaged to become twisted. Bob

Thats why I was asking also. I get several different answers. I want to be sure when I go to have a driveshaft made that I have the correct measurements and not just a guess or "some guy said it was" It seems 41.5"-42" center to center seems to be the most common answer. I guess 41.75" would be a safe bet.

Zooming in on your pic it looks like about 42.5 center to center. Is that what i looks like to everyone else?

Amigo, measure the drive shaft the way the shop measures.... It looks like they all have their own way of doing it too. For example, A shop in SA wanted me to measure from the rear tranny seal to the middle of the rear U joint.

I bet you call a shop and you will get something different...
