Default Why not a 9"

OK, so I don't want to shell out $2000 plus for a 12 bolt. The 8.8 option seems sketchy. I did some checking on a quick change, but any quick change that will accept axle tubes is $3000 or more (sprint car quick changes are real cheap, but I think they run a spool only, and won't take an axle tube).

Why not the 9"? Moser lists a bolt in housing for less than $600 on their site. Throw in some axles, bearings, and a used center section and I think it can still stay under $1500- for a rear that is proven to be basically indestructable.

I know some of you are running the 9"- is there a major downside beside the couple of ponies that it robs?

I bought a Moser 9" Housing and axle package.also 4.11 gears and a 1350 yoke and it came out to less then $1300 shipped.$200 for a used Detroit locker and a free center section from a friend so all I need to buy are the carrier, pinion bearings and some seals and I am all set.It is the best and cheapest way to go IMO.The drivetrain loss is 2% more then a 12 bolt but you can't get a locker in a 12 bolt.I have read of too many people breaking 12 bolts(there posi unit).9"=indestructable.

I have read some posts stating that the 9" will make the back of the car sit higher. Is this true and why?

The axle tubes are larger diameter and they weld the spring perches on top so the car will sit ~1" higher. Just remove the upper spring dampers (big rubber things) and slide some 1/2" rubber heater hose around the spring where it contacts the frame and it will be close to where it was with the stock rear. Moser 12 bolts are the same way, not sure about the strange.

I went with an aluminum center section, light spool, drilled and star flanged axles so I bet the whole rear doesnt weigh a lot more then the 10 bolt. My old moser 12 bolt with the HD 33 spline posi and aluminum cover was one heavy sob

Obviously if you have 3 channel ABS, and want to keep it, a 9" isnt the answer..

thanks for the info. Do you have any picks about how your car sits and the installed rear? I think I'm definitely gonna go 9".

I've had a 9" for a long time, and my friend HackerJoe probably had the first 9" in a LS1 F-Body.

-Will ride higher, KP nailed it. In fact I might install some cut stock springs and bring it down even more, want current pics?
-HackerJoe ran a center section case from a truck, with 31 spline axles and some sort of posi. Got a lot of good 10 second passes on it years ago, 1999.
-You need the torque arm mount from Moser, or have somone make one that is better and lighter.

Ok, so I'm starting to piece this together, and I see tons of 31 spline, used NASCAR detroit lockers on EBAY for like $200-$250. There are also a bunch of places offering "brand new" Strange street nod iron center sections 3.062 bore, for like $200. Has anyone had any experience with these? I'm mainly concerned with the lockers,- I can have the centersection mag'd so see if it's cracked.

Housing will be moser bolt- in (just under $600). Axles- strange or moser ~$300. I'll re-use or make backing plates / brake brackets. All I need is bearings, pinion support, and yoke.

So far:
Housing: $600
Axles: $300
Carrier $200
Locker: $200
Ring & pinion, bearings, bolts, seals: $300
Pinion support and yoke: $??
Setup:$??
Total so far: $1600.

Am I forgetting anything?

My setup:

Moser 9" housing and axles, stock length
31 spline Tractech soft locker (from Strange)
Strange center section from Strange
4.11 gear from Strange

I would talk to a Strange dealer on here I bought my struff three years ago.
