Default Moser 9" seems like worn out ring and pinion

Just bought the car, rear end sounded fine but started making little clunks when shifting lightly. I've heard of this problem with these ford 9" but I put the car on a lift and saw the driveshaft would move 1-2". The pinion takes that long to hit the ring. I took a video of it on my phone. When I mean it moves I mean by turning the driveshaft. I'm just wondering what the problem could be before I take the differential apart? Thanks for your help

In this video it was in gear with the wheels off the ground, at first it barely turns then feels like it slips and starts turning an inch or more.

Your 9" may have a locker in it, in which case the movement you are seeing is normal. Bob

better way to help us is to pull the e-brake(if it works), or have someone hold the brake pedal down while turning the yoke with the trans in neutral. you need to lock up the axles to see if there is a issue with the gear or diff unit.

Yes it has a Detroit locker. So everthing is normal. I feel like it's going to strip the gears if i launch to hard.

Also it does have a whine but it is barely noticeable from 30-70.
Is the fluid suppose to be all the way up to the bottom of the hole on the back of the rear? It seems very high and looks like it would take a gallon to fill up.

That's what I figured it had in it. You're supposed to do a dry hop when you have a locker before launching, as it will engage the locker.

A little whine isn't bad.

The oil fill is located on the left side of the housing on the Moser 9 inch rear end. It is relatively close to the torque arm bracket. Fill the rear up until the fluid starts to seep back out of the fill hole. It should only take a little over three quarts of gear lube. Bob

Yes that's what I've been told. I guess I'll stick with it. Still going to take it out ad put it new fluid. What do you reccomend? And does the fluid go to the bottom of the fill hole?

Napa 80/90 weight non synthetic gear lube is what I use, and you fill it up until it is to the bottom of the hole. Bob

Ok but the fluid is to the bottom of the hole on the back case! Isn't that very bad? I've heard of the dry hop how do I do it after the burnout?

Yes! I just checked It when I drove it back from Jacksonville. The seals aren't leaking, yet.
Idk I'll have the diff out tomorrow.
