9" pinion gear twisted and cracked (why)
Does anyone have an idea on what would cause this problem? This is a pic of my pinion gear out of my nine inch. It was purchased from epp when they were in buisness. 33 spline axles true track 4.11 gears. Was behind a 3800 lb six speed car. 28" et drags rst clutch 530 rwhp. The car isnt super fast only doing a 1.5x 60ft. Rear end was noisy from day one even know it was heat cycled and broken in. It only has about 10 passes and limited street miles under 5k. Only reason I took it apart was due to it getting even louder after my track passes.

I know they have two different gears as far as material wise. One is a harder material for street use and the other is softer for drag racing. The racing gear wears alot faster for obvious reasons. Not really sure if the info does you any good. I see alot of people racing there street gears without a prob.

Moser uses gears from US Gear, Motive and Richmond. All three are good manufacturers. Bob

Do all these companies shot peen their gear sets? Shot peening puts a compressive residue stress on the surface to prevent cracking like that. Could simply be an incorrect process in the manufacturing stage.

I would look it up at my end if I had the Exotic Performance Plus records, but I handed all the records over to the Exotic owners when we shut that business down. I have asked Moser to look up his PO# to see what they can do. Bob

Thanks, I appreciate it! Moser did too for this customer who ordered this rear back in the Spring of 2008.
A new set of gears and and install kit are leaving Moser today to the OP, at no cost to him. Bob

Yes I would like to confirm that. Bob helped out in a huge way making himself the buffer between me and Moser. He took care of everything for me. They sent out a New Gear set and I couldn't be happier. I was fully expecting to have to pay due to the nature of the product but again Thank you to kip at moser and Bob at Brute speed for taking care of me I have nothing but great things to say about both parties!!!!! Only thing is i'm still curious as to what may have caused the breakage? Right now I'm assuming its a faulty gear set due to the replacement I'm receiving? Which is more then fine by me I'm just curious.

We have a Camaro that runs low 8's @ 167 MPH. We use regular 9" gear sets, not the pro or soft drag race gears. We have zero problems. I'd say the gear was bad from the factory. We stick with US made gears, not so easy now.
BTW: We run 4.11, 4.30 and 4.56's. And reuse them in the Camaro and another slower car.
The Camaro is powered by a BBF We just won the Pinks Quick 8 with it in Phoenix. Should be on TV soon.
