Noise Help ???
I have a 1998 Z28 and I have been hearing a noise coming from the rear end for about 4000 miles now. I thought it was my tires but I put new tires on this past weekend and still have a noise. It is the same when I push on the gas or just let the car cruise on the highway. It sounds like a dry bearing noise. So i am asking what bearings can I replace without having to make any Settings with gauges that I have not done before. Any direction would be heplful. Thanx in advance to any.

Have You changed the rearend lube since the noise began? If so does the noise increase or decrease when turning left or right? Are there other noises like a clunk when going from reverse to low?

Carl I replaced the gear oil w/ additive for limited slip about 10,000 miles ago, No, turning does not affect the noise and there is no abnormal clunk when shifting. Thanx for the reply.

You might consider pulling the wheels, checking the brakes to see if a parking brake is dragging or a caliper not retracting. If that produces no findings then either take it to a shop for a professional diagnosis or start by replacing the axle bearings which are the typical bearing failure on most cars.

OK which bearings? There should be bearings on each end of the axel, is there a DIY somewhere that someone could direct me to? Thanx. I have done some transmission work and torn motors apart but have never disassembled a rear end.

The best way to find the noise is to raise and secure the car in the air and have someone hold the throttle at a speed where the noise can be heard clearly and use a stethascope on different points of the housing until you locate the noise. If the noise doesnt change with turning then its most likely not a axle bearing. You also have carrier bearings and pinion bearings that are all towards the center of the housing. Three of those 4 bearings have to be pressed off. If you pay attention to where everything goes you can usually put it right back together without any measuring.

OK I found a local guy that i trust to work on my car. What is a good replacement axel to buy? would I need to replace them as a set? GM wants $300 each, that must be a joke, I want a good axel but don't want to get ripped off. Any thoughts? Thanx .

I think the Moser axels are like $300.00 a set. Check their website...

So... I was looking at Summit and they hace 3 other brands..Alloy, Superior and Summit Brand. Does anyone have any experience with these?

Did this person confirm you had a bad axle?
Is this a stock 10 bolt? If so I wouldnt spend any kind of money on new axles. A set of junkyard axles with little to know wear would do fine. You could get those at a u pull it for next to nothing.

I spoke to a guy in Mooresville NC and told him the history ( changed the gear oil and added lube, put new tires on, minimal amount of metal on the magnet inside the rear cover almost like a paste) and he said that it sounds like the bearings on the axel by the wheels. He also said most likely I will need to replace an axel if the bearing had done any damage to the axel. He also said that there is some type of bearing that is offset to accomadate a worn axel. However I would rather just replace the axel if it is off the car. The car has 265,000 mile on it and has never given me any trouble so this is not too much to ask, but I need the car as it is my DD.

I took the car in today and looks like I need bearings in one wheel and in the rear. I have an appointment to drop the car off next thursday. Seem like real nice people, I think they were a good choice. Thanx LS1Tech.

So it was the rear wheel bearings? I am getting noise and vibration at high speeds and i am dying to get it fixed... it's just a pain to find out exactly what the problem is..

Yes it was a wheel bearing and one that is on the rear itself. I found a local guy here on this site and went down and had it checked out. Gave me a great price for repair also.
