I have a ? My car is a 99, A4, with boltons and stock 3.23's. I raced a 05 vette from 65-110 and he put about 2-2.5 cars on me, I feel like the cars kinda dead when it goes from 2nd to 3rd. I generally like to race form a 65-70 kickdown and was wondering if going to a 3.42 or 3.73 would make the car any faster at the kind of racing I have described. thanks.

Numerically higher gear ratios are really only of any help from a stop with optimum traction to overcome the weight of the car with more axle torque.
You are gonna need a larger converter which will help between shifts, less weight, or simply more power. Hope this helps you.

well, I normally run into these guys on my way to work and dont have time to go elsewhere. I would imagine Id have alot of fingers waving by me trying to stop and race on the interstate, haha. I was just thinking that higher gears would make the car pull harder therefore making it pull away at highway speeds faster thereby allowing my car to beat these pesky vettes. Im also looking into more hp mods such as cam n heads but thought gears might be a good starter mod.

I just did my 3:73s 2 weeks ago (99 ta auto)...cured that shitty 2nd and 3rd gear pull...
Feels twice as fast...but then again I came from those shitty 2:73s...I would get a stall if I were you..your 3:23s scream for a stall..you have a decent ratio as is...A jump to 3:73s for the $ is not worth it in your case...you'll hear more stall answers then gears in your case...and I would go with it...you'll blow right past that vette with a stall before you will the gears...

Torque converter is what you want not gears and if you plan on racing it all the way until it locks up you need to get a multi disk. If you only race them in d and not overdrive you only need to get a single disk converter.

but he's coming from 3:23s....he will hardly notice....
That would be like when I had 2:73s, and if I went only to 3:23s, not worth
it....
2:73s to 3:73s worth it.....3:23s with 3600 money well spent.

Good opinions and reasons from each, but I have one more question. I dont really know what stall to go with and the fact that my tranny is a high miler. Dont get me wrong, It still bangs the crap outta second at half throttle but it works good now and I dont wanna mess that up. I have also been told that a stall only really helps from a stop, am I wrong??? Ltes say that when I nail it from a roll the gearing I presently have lets my rpm stay above 3500 at any gear 2nd, 3rd, or 4th. Is a stall still gonna help, running that kind of rpm through the gears??? thanks.

High stall converter makes a big difference if you are just cruising and step on it. The car goes through the rpm range much faster thus accelerating faster. If you want to know which stall to get you should call one of the converter sponsors they should be able to set you straight.
