Default Auburn Gear Oil change questions...

So I have a 98 TA stock 10 bolt rear and have never changed the gear oil. I have read that all 98's have Auburn rear ends (is this true?) and that I have to use 2 qts. of gear oil with a limited slip additive. I picked up 2 qts of Valvoline Durablend Synthetic 80w90 that has "limited slip" written on the bottle and says it is good for GL-5. Does this mean it already has the limited slip additive in it? Is this all I need or do I still need to get this additive? Also, the only way to drain the old oil is by pulling the cover off, right?

Cover has to be loosened to drain the fluid, but it's best to remove it to do a visual inspection. Your cover magnet will appear covered with metal shards, normal because of the way the magnet is holding all the iron 'dust'.
Yes,98s' and earlier got Auburns.
How many miles on it ?

Well I am like the 3rd owner but if its never been changed than the axle has about 125k on it. I wana change the gear oil but not sure if i got the right stuff. Its the valvoline synthetic 80w90 that says "limited slip" on the bottle. Is this good or do i also need the additive? Aslo, would 2 qts be enough?

I can't answer your oil question as I always use non-synthetic gear oil. I only use the additive when an Eaton posi is involved, not that that's what I'm recommending to do.
125,000 is a good life for an Auburn. I've seen the Auburns' cone clutches wore completely out at a range of 110,000 to 150,000.

I put a auburn in my 10 bolt, and used synthetic. It made soooo much noise. I change it to conventional and put in the additive, and it was 100% more quite. I'd not using synthetic with the auburn.

Thanks for the responses. Anybody else running something different? Will this Valvoline synthetic "limited slip" be good or should I just get non synthetic with the additive?

ok i just did some searching.... if you have put the synthetic in, drain it. You will have chattering with synthetic. Use conventional and an additive.

ehh, I'm not sure. I'd just go to autozone get some conventional and autozone sells the additive also.

Use any 80w90 regular gear oil with ether ford or gm additive. Do not use synthetic gear oil. Ether Valvoline 80w90 dino or blend, or lucas 80w90 gear oil is fine.
