Oh, moving the battery... weight distribution. Made traction a little better.

And OP, I agree... get a used set. Got my gears and diff for free, but from two different people.

So there is absolutely no gain going from 2.73's to 3.42's as far as 1/4mile times go? Will the car dyno more, putting more HP to the wheels?

How much does it hurt your fuel economy?

I've got the 2.73's now and I get 27MPG highway at 70MPH. Although, with 2.73's my car doesn't feel as peppy off the line, and it's kind of hard to spin the tires, maybe I just have really good tires? Lol

I think I picked up a 10th, but that was about it.
It didn't really improve my driveability that much actually. but then I live in an area where there isn't a whole lot of hills to drive up either.
Would I swap out my 2.73's for 3.42's again?
Probably not.
I think I would actually opt for a bigger stall then my 3600 to be honest, and keep the stronger gearset.

I'd say it felt faster going from 2.73s to 3.42s, and a little funner to drive. (get in the power band faster). I've never tracked it though. I had a SS4000 before and after the gear change btw.

If you don't care about the mileage much, just opt for 3.73s. Make it a change you really notice.

I too had a 10 bolt that I got with 3.73s that broke.

At the time I needed a new rear fast and all I could find was a 2.73 rear so I picked it up. from a roll I can't tell the difference. Taking off from a stop I do notice it takes a bit more RPM to get going.

Lately I've been thinking about getting 3.73s put back in but after some reading the $6-700 that I'd have to spend for new 3.73 gears and labor to get them isn't worth the .1-.2 and the slightly better driveability. I'll get steeper gears when I get a good rear in the car.

Lemons is spot on

You'll also get about 2MPG better on the highway with 2.73's instead of 3.73's.

From a roll I think 2.73's should be better, since they'll be in a lower gear. Off the line in my car, it's tough to spin the tires actually.

95mph the car hits a dead spot and drops horrible rpms.. Its the reason you see any gain in the 1/4 off the swap.. The 1/8 doesn't see it. After you eliminate that there is little to be gained with lower gears.

Are you referring to a dead spot in 2.73 gears or 3.42's or 3.73's?

My car has the 2.73's, and I know if I put my foot down when the car is ever over 85MPH I might as well forget about it, I'm not going anywhere fast. I'll actually lower my speed to 84MPH before getting into it again, because the car will still jump into it at that speed. It's even weaker than the 40MPH deadspot.
