The right gear
I have a 2000 camaro z28 auto trans. it has an cold air intake cat back custom tune dynoed at 290 at the weels. It dose not do well in the quarter mile found out it has highway gears.Looking for best gear with out killing it on the highway driving. I have been told 373 is it to much gear?
I have 3.23s and I would rather go with a higher stall converter than to switch to, say, 3.73 gears. I'd gain more with the stall than with the gears and I personally like the 3.23s for daily driving but 3.73s would give me better midrange and more fun but i'm trying to keep some semblance of gas mileage. I'm guessing you have the 2.73s? Going from those to 3.73 will give you a decent gain in the 1/4.

If I had it to do over again I would not have gone
from 3.23s to 3.42s. It just makes it harder to hook.
But I test drove a 2.73 car and it was weak. Get a
3.23 chunk (or just the whole rear) and call it good.
A 3.42 rear stands a good chance of having been
beat up behind a M6.

373s are probably the most you wanna go in an A4 with a stock size tire. Otherwise you will be shifting into overdrive in the quarter. 373s are not bad on the highway. I think that they will put you around 2500rpm at 65. Someone correct me if im wrong.

Very strange. I've owned two 3.23 cars and two 2.73 cars, and noticed only a minor difference in performance between the two ratios. The 3.23 car might have been 1-2 tenths quicker and 1-2mph faster.
3.23s and a 3600ss has been a good all around setup for me, but I was lucky in that my car came with the gu5 option. I'm hopefully going to a 28" tall tire and 4.10s or 3.90s this summer. I'm probably getting too greedy with the 10 bolt but time will tell.

I would agree. 3.23s + 3500-4000 stall is an ideal street/strip setup, IMO.

3.23 to 3.73 swap isn't worth much in the way of gains once you already have a stall in the ~3500 range.
