Default what pinion shim did you use on your 10 bolt motive 3.73's?????

i'm just trying to get a better starting point for my motive performance (orange box not blue) 3.73's. i have tried the stock shim and many others to try to get the pattern right and different backlash settings with all the shims i have tried. i know i should measure pinion depth but i dont have the tool to do so. so i'm just trying to get some sort of a general consensus of what you have used with your set up, and maybe that might get me to a better starting point.

its going to be different for every rear its that simple.

I guess if you don't have the depth tool a dial indicator off the housing will get you to the recommended depth just go off the flat spot where the bearing cap bolts to. and extend the indicator to the top of the pinion. this is your depth. (just make sure its sitting level on the machined surface. )

adjust this shim thickness until this will bring you to the recommended depth. this is your starting point and often is where you will leave it. the rest is often adjusted by the carrier shims you will still need to get back lash adjusted

yes, i understand. but most of the stock pinion shims are .029-.034 from what ive seen. if most people are using a .020-.025 or on the other end .040or so, then this may help me with a better starting point.

I know what your saying but that's not going to happen. most end up with something close to the factory shim that is in there since thats what the housing differences are made up by.

Maybe that's not what you want to hear! not to sound pissy but I see where this is going...I will keep my advise to myself

i hear ya man. i'm just getting frustrated with this thing. ive done one before for my sister and had zero problems using the factory shim with blue box motives, but my rear is just fighting the whole way. maybe it's just me...

For future reference, I have had extremely good luck using the factory shims when redoing gears. It seems pretty damn close right from the get-go.
