Depends on a lot of factors. Lift being one of them, and how often he does rear ends would be a big second.

He's got a lift. As to how often I'm not sure, he's ASE certified abut works out of his shop at his house. He has done good work before, but quoted me like $900 without the cost of the gears..

Thats alot, depends on if hes just putting in the pinion and ring gear or rebuilding the rear end with new bearings and seals. To rebuild the entire rear end it takes about 6-7 hours if your experienced and have a lift. So $900 is like $130-$150 an hour which is rediculous. I've seen rear end rebuilds go from $200-$400 for labor around here depending on where you take it.

What a rip off. You could buy some rear ends for that kind of coin.

And to rebuild it yes...and hmmm. Even if he wasn't including the hardware $650 still too steep? He charges $75/hr in labor...so that's like over 8.5 hours

Wait is this for a 10 bolt? I sure hope not.

If so you probably spent somewhere between $200-$250 for a set of gears am I right? Now you're about to spend $900 on labor. So you would basically be dropping $1100 dollars on $200 rear end. That makes no sense, you're two or three hundred dollars away from a built and working 12 bolt or 9 inch.

If your going to pay shop rate, that is what it is. My Moser 3.42 to 4.10 swap and a new diff was a little more due to the diff but gearing swap itself took time. A shop quotes you book for a reason. If they find more issues or things need resolving they are not going to get screwed if it does take 6-8 hrs. IF it takes less, then thats their profit for being efficent.

I would google search around your area and get some recommondations from car guys. Certain names ALWAYS come up and then search from there. See if they will let you buy parts and bring in or at least get a full est. After the initial shock wears off, see if there can be something done. Not all est are done with the cheapest of parts. Some things can be swapped out.

On jackstands and installing all new beaings and a solid spacer, I can do a 10 bolt in 4 hours. Existing bearings and solid spacer, 3hours. Existing bearings and a crush sleeve, 2 hours.

I just got quoted by another shop 3-4 hours of labor....so I don't know what he was talking about!! Even if he included $350 for the hardware, $550 would be over 7 hours of labor since he charges $75/hr.

Thanks for the heads up guys
