4.10s in a stock 10 bolt
So, after being persuaded on here, I decided to go with 4.10s instead of 3.90 gears. The main reason I am getting these is with my 3.42s, I am constantly being kicked out of the power band when I shift and I figured these would fix that problem.
Anyway, Im going to be running these with my 10 bolt rear (stock) and my car hardly ever sees the track, the only abuse I give it is on the highway.
Do you think my 10 bolt will be alright with these gears?

You'll be alright with them on the street probably, but then again it is possible it may break every time. Friend had them in his auto and they were setup well, and it lasted until we removed it for a 12 bolt the other day (not sure if he beat it as much as I do my car).

Hmm, alright. Do you think I would be any safer going with the 3.90s? I just don't want to have that "low point" when I shift getting on it at WOT.

M6 + 10-bolt = bad relationship, some make it through the honeymoon and some get stuck at the alter..... My 4.10s went to the track 1 time on Dragradials 3 times on street tires and about 6 months of street driving before the ring gear lost 2 teeth and the pinion gear looked as if it was sanded down barely any visable teeth. Although you don't go to the track very often it would be to your advantage to either build an 8.8 there are many of s that have them look up member "hiltsy" his write up is awesome! You can always pay the money for the other rear ends available from 1800-4000

With street tires, no hard launching...should be fine for a while. Be ready to shift out of first gear quick, will def have you shifting through the gears faster. 3.90s or 4.10s..not a whole lot of diff.

With mods in my sig i'm still on the stock 10 bolt, and i'm getting ready to spray the car too Now I do have a stronger differential, but it's still a factory 10 bolt

Putting them in the 10 bolt is a waste save up and upgrade the rear.....trust me I am in the same situation I put a big cam in my car now it needs gears. If you can't afford to spend 2k at once on a new one buy the housing and axles first then buy the center section later when you have the money.

IMHO, it's not the ratio, it's the lack of beef inside the 10 bolt. As long as you aren't sidestepping the clutch on sticky tires at 5,000 rpm, you will be okay.
I have had 4 different M6 10 bolts dragraced them all on street tires and never had a problem.
Your mileage may vary.....

I got 10k miles out of my 4.10s in the 10 bolt before stripping the pinion teeth again. No hard launches no sticky tires and no track time just pure street driving.
Meanless to say im not wasting any more $$ on the 10 bolt. Going with a QP 9"...

Damn, I really want the 4.10 gears, but Im really not dropping 2 grand on a rear end right now lol. Ill just go with the 3.90s and hope for the best. Do you think ill notice a difference from 3.42s with the new 3.90s?

yes you will 3.90s and 4.10's are very similar I noticed a huge difference from 3.42s. even thought the op has decided on 4.10's i would still go 3.90, not just because i run them either. to me, and this is subjective, the 4.10s feel too short when I felt them it felt like 1st gear was a complete waste of time leaving a traffic light just start in 2nd. the 3.90s are short but not that bad and I feel they are a better in town gear. also the 3.90 uses the 3.73 pinion which is bigger than the 4.10's so it is also stronger

I blew up a stock 10 bolt with 3.42 gears on the street shifting from 1st to 2nd - did I mention it was on street tires. This was in my 94 Z28 with a hotcam, it was only making 335hp. There were quite a few spider gear teeth in the housing when we pulled the diff cover off.

So many different experiences on the stock 10 bolt you just never know. A lot probably depends on how the car has been treated in it's lifetime. I've had H/C/I for 2 years now on 315 dr's and M6 with no issues yet. But I also bought the car new and don't beat on it....never go to the track either. Could be the X factor with these rears.

I had 3.90's for roughly 30K miles before the pinion broke. M6 car, 600+ rwhp on spray with drag radials however I didn't launch it hard often.
After the pinion broke, I went with 4.10's and wish I would've done it sooner.
Despite the comments above, there is a noticeable difference between the two. Some argue the 4.10's are too short and run through the gears too quickly whereas others can't stand the short "dead spot" with the 3.90's. At the end of the day, it comes down to personal preference -- I accepted the quicker run through the gears in exchange for completely eliminating the dead spot in the range.
First trip to the track (road course, not the drag strip) with the 4.10's are coming next Friday, so I'll let you know how I feel about them after that event.
