Default NEED HELP! 10 bolt with Driver Side C-clip won't come out far enough

I am trying to replace the bearing and and seal in my 1999 trans Am with rear disc brakes and trans control.I took out the ABS sensor and all the necessary parts. I pushed in the passenger axle "C" clip fell out. The Driver side is another story, it WILL NOT come out, the axle just won't push in far enough to allow enough clearance for the clip to come loose. I've hit the hub with a hammer, used a ratchet strap to try and get another 1/16 of an inch but nothing. The C -Clip is free but it won't tilt up enough to get around the front lip to come out. I am out of ideas .Any suggestions?

Did you try taking a pry bar or large screw driver and pulling in on the axle then use a small magnet to pull c-clip? You can place it in the c-clip groove on the axle and pry inwards.

Use the magnet, some times they can be stuck from suction. Kinda like getting your foot stuck in the mud.

Not sure how the GM stuff is, but the 8.8" in my son's Crown Vic needed to have the abs pickups removed from the backing plates in order for the axles to slide in enough to pull the clips.

It shouldn't be that difficult to come out. Try grabbing the axle that's stuck and pulling in and out really quickly. I usually do that and they shoot out but it should have came out espescially with a magnet. If you truly have exhausted all possibilities and truly come to the point your sure it won't come out. You could get the carrier shim out on the side you have the axle out of. Then slide the carrier to the right. Let the carrier shim on the stuck side slide out enough to cut it in two with a cutoff wheel then once the shims out the carrier will slide toward the pass side. You'll be needing a new shim but you'll have the c clip out. And you did take the wheel sensors off if its a 4 channel car?

Shimming the driver side back tight would put it back the way it was since you have one solid shim that you won't be cutting on the pass side. I would definitely avoid cutting it if I could though.

Maybe not... But my guess is, you'll never get the shim back in w/o a case spreader or some means to temporarily increase the width between the caps. You cannot hammer in a shim and expect it to live.

I ran into this issue before. In my case it was a friends rear and a Diff shop used axle saver bearings when his axle bearings went out and grooved the axle. The axle savers prevented us from being able to push the axle in far enough to get the c clip out..

If You Have Abs, Unplug The Sensor And Take It Out, Then You'll Be Able To Push The Axle In Farther

oChristiano - what did you guys end up doing? I think I'm having the same problem. Clip just won't come out and even if it does, I don't know how i'd get it back in at this point. Removed the sensor that's clearly an issue, and didn't get anywhere.

Ran into this yesterday and could NOT get the L side c-clip out..... so I used a c-clamp and drew in the axle inward and the clip fell right out.

had to take my wheel sensors out to push the axle far enough in to get the c clip to pop out.

I know this thread is 7 years old @G Atsma haha

Doing new gears swapping from 4.10's to 3.90's and I tried everything getting those darned c-clips out of the axles on my Duragrip posi. Thanks to @TA_Freak for the c-clamp suggestion. Clips fell right out
