Default Drive Shaft Question

How much can a stock aluminum drive shaft hold? Went to the track yesterday and was afraid to launch hard due to the driveshaft. used street tires for a couple of passes and slicks for the other. rear is moser 12 bolt so Im good there. Just worried about DS breaking

I have seen the stock aluminum ones twist like a pretzel at the track numerous times with bolt on cars on sticky tires.

I know its never a for sure thing but what is a "safe" rpm launch range?

Look at my thread "When you hook stuff breaks" a couple posts below.


I have launched this car a least a hundred times with Mickey Thompson ET Streets at like 3500 RPM. I guess it couldn't hold anymore and last Friday was all it took and twisted right off, I was on Nitto 555R's and they hooked and it twisted right off. Same launch method I've always done.

That's why I'd run a DS loop and look into at least a 3.5" aluminum driveshaft or 3" chromoly if you're serious about tracking the car. Not really worth it to damage your car or you if you snap the drive shaft at 6k rpm.

I saw your thread, 3500 I think would feel ok for me. Id start it off easy though lol The slicks weren't mine so I probably wont have them again for a while or till I get y own.

Previous owner gave me a d/s loop but I haven't installed it yet. Its my dd right now so Ill wait on the aftermarket d/s till its more of a weekender or track car.

The DS doesn't change the way the car feels, DD or weekend racer. It's a few hundred bucks to keep you safe. That's all I'm saying. And its not very hard to install on jackstands.

Yeah I know it will drive the same I just figured I'll wait a bit since I won't be launching it hard or at track for a while. I'll put the loop on juuust in case. But IM definitely going to look into a new one so I can complete the drive train and really get on it. :-)

Jsteel, what suspension mods.were you using when you got your 11.9? My best time was a 12.68 @ 114. Granted, I was launching at idle so I wouldn't kill the ds

Removed front sway bar, adjustable panhard, lcas, and lca reloc brackets thats it. Stock shocks all the way around and stock torque arm.

Wow, I thought you would've had more. I have adj. torque arm, adj phb, slp boxed lca's with poly bushings, bilstein shocks with stock slp springs, and my front sway bar is still on. Maybe I just need a lot more practice LOL... but mine is an m6 also...
