Default Bad news...

So I finally got the bird into my mechanic. (had some noise coming from underneath and big power loss) I started as a 1L this year and haven't had any time to work on it . I thought it was trans but now I get the dreaded news that it is my rear diff. She is a goner. They want 1400 for parts and labor to swap a used 10 bolt. I am debating on doing a swap myself and whether to get a 9 in or just another 10 bolt. I am starting to look for used 10 bolts and used 9 in rears so if anyone comes across something PM me. Also is there a good writeup for doing the swap? I would rather do it myself.

Swapping an entire rear end is a cake walk. Rebuilding it isn't difficult either. Sounds like that shop is out to f you with that price.

^^^agree. I swap complete rearends myself and I'm 67. most difficult for me is holding the rearends' yoke at the proper angle to line up with the driveshaft.

^^^+2

I can get used 10 bolts from a ws6 in the 300-400 range and do the swap in my garage with hand tools in a few hours. If you decide to go 9-inch, check the sponsors. A junk yard 9 can be done, but it's a ton of work. A 9 inch from the sponsors made to fit your car should swap in just as easy as a used 10 bolt. That's my next upgrade. Only exception might be you might need to do some driveshaft work to fit the 1350 yoke

Ya the used part they were sourcing (pumpkin) is $750. This shop has always treated me fair and they say 5 hours labor at $89 plus the $750 part and odds and ends is $1400. Anyone have an idea where to find a quality used 10 bolt pumpkin?

look in the classifieds, you can more than likely find an entire rear end for about 350$

I've been looking there. I will continue to keep an eye out thanks. The only part that sucks is shipping. I wish I could afford a 9 :/ darn grad school.

I wish I could afford that. Grad school is sucking most of my money.

I managed to find a 10 bolt out of a f body with 80k for $300 bucks about an hour away. Going to get it next weekend. I have one bookmarked writeup for the swap. Any other helpful tips or links?

be cautious as the rearend needs to match channel of your car. 3 channel=ABS 4 channel=ABS & TC.

It's easy to swap a rear if you have the right tools. Don't let the shop buttfuck you.

then you need a 3 channel rearend with one sensor at the top of the rearends' center section.

I have installation instructions at the above link that may help you out once you find a rear. Bob

I'm doing it myself. Already have the rear. I am still curious about the price. Labor for vehicle work in my area anyway runs about 80-100 per hour. This shop is 89 per hour. They quoted 5 hours of labor (425). The part they were going to get was $750. And then odds and ends (oil, seals tax made up the rest.) So I don't think it is horrible, just cheaper to do it myself with a 300 dollar rear.

Just curious, how many miles do you have on the bad differential?
What were the symptoms you observed?
Did you ever replace the differential lube?
