Default Driveshaft won't fit after T56 swap

Almost finished my auto to t56 swap. If I remember correctly I was actually running the original LT1 driveshaft from my 1996 with my LS1/4L60E. Just tried to install it with the 6 speed bolted up and its too long. Its bottomed out in the tail shaft housing but won't fit in the rear yoke. I thought all driveshaft's from 82-02 were interchangeable, but I've also read auto driveshaft's were slightly longer yet interchangeable.

Can anyone confirm this? Ready to be done with this damn swap.

Both the 4L60E and T56 driveshafts are the same length. What is your measurement from the back of the tailshaft to the centerline of the rear yoke, when in the loaded position? Bob

Something isn't right as we have 10 bolt and 12 bolt driveshafts made for a 44.25 dimension. How far is it going into the tailshaft, perhaps the splines are twisted? Bob

I'll check. I was able to remove/reinstall it on my auto without issues. It looks like it goes pretty far on the output shaft, right to or past the rusty spot at least.

You may need to jack the rear into the ride height position to be able to get the shaft in or rather the u-joint to sneak past the pinion yoke.

That is true, if the rear is hanging down the shaft won't normally go in. The rear needs to be in the loaded position. Bob

I tried both ways, with the suspension loaded then unloaded.

Check out the pics, the smaller dia. shaft is the factory LT1. The other is from my 2001 Z28 that was totaled. I had the LT1 shaft shortened 1.5 inches, before I found my old LS shaft of course. I used a straight edge to line up the front yokes, then measured as you can see. The pic makes it look like they are uneven but they're straight, must of been the angle.

The LS shaft does fit, but it isn't aluminum. So for now I'm using the old LT shaft (the LS has a nice dent) since I just had it shortened and re-balanced.
