Default 10 bolt bearing preload before crush sleeve is crushed

Hey, I have an issue with a 10 bolt I purchased. J bought it because it had 4.10s but after installing it, it howled like crazy. Pulled it back out and it turned out the inner pinion bearing just slid right on and off by hand. Decided to replace all pinion bearings and races as well as a new crush sleeve. When tightening the pinion I noticed as soon as I put the yoke on there was nino play in the pinion and once I started tightening the nut I got a ton of preload before ever starting to crush the sleeve. What's the issue here? I'm guessing this is why it made so much noise before. Is there a taller crush sleeve I need to use or what?

Thanks
Greg

Nope, only one size. You are using a crush sleeve and not a solid collar correct? Only other reason would be something improperly machined or a pinion race not fully seated in the housing.

That's what I figured. Don't know what the issue is. This is everything I have for the pinion.. minus the seal

Based on the amount of threads I can see out the top that sleeve is already crushed too far. You need a new one.

When I tighten the yoke it gets so tight that it is hard to turn the yoke at all. Doesn't make a lick of sense lol

The sleeve is too short. When you tighten a new sleeve, its starts with no load so the yoke free spins. If yours is tight its passed being crushed.

Although it doesn't make sense for that to be the issue either.. even the old crushed crush sleeve dkes the same thing.

Think about what you just said. The old crush sleeve is already crushed. The new one should be noticeably longer. Is it?

Can you post a pic of the old one and new one side by side? I could get you a measurement of what they should be later tonight

According to this site there should be a shim or something under the crush sleeve? But how big is this shim? Would it even make a difference with my current issue?
