You can't simply count the bolts on the diff cover to identify a rear end.

The S60 is a great rear end. I bought one from Carl at CRP and couldn't be happier with it. If your car infact has a S60 you are in good shape. Don't confuse it with "10 bolt" that came on these cars from the factory just because it has 10 bolts on the diff cover. Without getting into it too much, the S60 is much beefier and stronger than the 10 bolt that came in these cars. If you want to learn more I would recommend googling "Strange S60" and reading up on it.

I think I see what is happening here. Baba, if you in fact have an S60 rear end, you have an S60, forget the amount of bolts on the cover. When you are reading on this forum and you hear someone say "10 bolt" they are generally referring to the stock 7.625" rear that came on the car from the factory. When they are referencing a "12 bolt" rear end they are talking about a heavier duty rear end that Chevy has been producing since the mid 60s. These are often used to replace the weaker 10 bolts. The Ford 9in is also popular. You can't simply count the bolts on the diff cover to identify a rear end.

That's not surprising given Carl's reputation. If you have specific questions regarding how your S60 is set up I would recommend calling him. He can tell you everything you need to know

The strange s60 axle is a "Dana 60", based on the design and size of the Dana 60 but with a few differences to make it fit into a 4th gen fbody. Google Dana axles for a wealth of info, what really matters for strength and durability is the larger size of everything especially the 9.75" ring gear in the s60 vs the 7.625" in the junk oem 10 bolt. The axle referred to as 12 bolt which some guys have been able to fit into an fbody I believe has an 8.5" diameter ring gear.

10 and 12 bolts are gm rear ends that have 10 and 12 cover and 10 and 12 ring gear bolts. They are sorta generic terms as there are different sized 10 bolt rear ends, and there are different 12 bolt, gm car, gm truck, strange and Moser to name a few. GM 12 bolts weren't produced long so now strange and Moser actually cast new ones....but it's a copy of an old design, same with the strange s60. It's a new casting based off an older style rear end.
