Default Got 3.73's and HATE THEM

Well just got 3.73's installed in my car, they whine worse than a baby. The drone is deafening. The car shifts through the gears super fast, no way to feather the gears at all, to actually pull up through the rpm band. If you hitt the gas to actually get it to go up the tires just spin. The speedo was adjusted, but should the shiftpoint also be adjusted? I didnt think so... But the car is in like OD at 40. No matter how much i try. I want my 2.73's back Everyone said gears were going to be great, NOT FOR ME! Sorry just got the car home and needed to vent... 3.73's

Sounds like they're not installed right if they're that loud. Gears should really wake a car up.

no converter, yeah i went to a really well known shop, got the gears they wanted that were suppose to be the quietest. I got a brand new carrier, torsen. I kind of figured the shift points needed to be adjusted... i wish i new how to do it myself The shop is 2 hrs away. Of course i guess i need to see about getting the gears re-set anyways. Thanks for the input guys.

It's not the gears you need to be pissed at. It's the installer

the gears should not be loud, i bought gears that everyone said would "howl", yet i have practically no gear sound....3.73's are more designed for drag racing also, not the greatest from a roll, but a hell of a lot better than 2.73's IMO........the only spot they really lack is when you get over 105 MPH

Find a new shop and get them installed right.

You should notice a huge change off the line with the 3.73s since you have a stock torque converter.

I agree, I love my 3.73s, they're snappy as hell and hit hard with my YTP4200! Get them installed right.

Another vote for a bad install.

I'll make you feel better. I went through 6, (yes 6!) installs before getting my 4.10s set. And I paid for each install The installers blamed the gears, the factory blamed the installers. I got fucked in the middle.

It almost cost me a marriage!!

BTW, you may be screwed....if those gears are howling that loud, you may have already worn into them. The only solution:

Yup. NEW set of gears. Sorry and good luck!

Default geared up

I went from 2.73 auburn posi to 3.23 torsen and i noticed the torsen makes more noise with the addition flut style gears. That is comparing it to the auburn. I am glad i didn't go with any gear higher then a 3.23 because now i have a lot more wheel spin. I will not run DRs on a daily driver. From a roll those 3.73s are too much gear. For the track with slicks or drs you still have to run a 27- 28 inch tire for them to work properly.

Another thing to look into is that if you pay for a few more installs it would pay for a much stronger 12bolt or 9" rear.

i went through 6 installs also before they finally ordered a new set of gears.... I had the same people who installed it the first time redo it until they got it right. And like I said it took them 6 times and a new set of 3.42's before they got it right. There is still some noise, but nothing like it was.

The gears are not setup properly, or they are a bad set of gears. I have a set of Timken 3.73's that a professional rearend shop installed over 2 yrs. ago, and I have no noise issues whatsoever.

They are great if you keep the top speed of your race to 110 - 125 mph (depending upon the rpm you rev to). If you race to 130, then you may be forced into 4th gear which would suck.

For the track with slicks or drs you still have to run a 27- 28 inch tire for them to work properly.
I know plenty of bolt-on guys with nittos or bfgs running 3.73s. Even on a H&C car, 26" ET streets are the most common tire. You will bog down on 28" tires and only 3.73 gears unless you have big cubes or FI.

I keep drag radials on my car for the street and love them. However, they do wear out fast so if you put on serious miles, they would get expensive. I don't recommend them in the winter as the compound gets hard and they don't stand a chance in snow.

Ok Nikon1999, stop being a baby.
3.73's are the best gears to get, and I bet I can say for a lot of people when I say that I've never heard anyone complain about gears but you. The installation was probably bad and did you forget to add GM Additive to get rid of the noise? I've done gears on my car 4 times and not once did they **** up..I just broke'em... anyways, learn how to do it...it's as SIMPLE as CHANGING YOUR OIL (not really)...except you gotta get dirty and take your time...

Steps:
1: Lift the Car
2: Take off the Differential plate and drain the fluid into a bucket or whatever
3: Take the rear wheels off
4: Take the rear Calipers off
5: Take out the sensors behind the rotors
6: Put the car in neutral
7: Spin the Carrier till you see a screw sticking from one side to the other.
8: Unbolt the support bearings (holding brackets) They look like this '[' ']'
9: Take out the screw that you turned the carrier to see.
10: take out the piece that the screw held in.
11: push in your axles to make the C clips fall
12: pull out both axles
13: Get a bar and pry out the carrier (it's tough)
14: Disconnect the driveshaft. (You have to spin it till you see two bolts and put it in park and take out the two bolts that support the yoke right next to the pinion gear. There's two more on the opposite side. Put it in neutral. Spin the driveshaft till you see the other two bolts, and put it back in park, and take off the two bolts. Once disconnected, push the driveshaft towards the tranny and keep it out of the way.)
15: get a 32mm socket and take off the pinion nut. Use a wrench to hold the yoke from spinning since nothings holding it now.
16: Take out the pinion gear.
17: Inspect your gears, bearings, carrier, inside the housing, fluid.
18: Now install whatever gear you want...

Yes...it's that easy....
