Default what gears do i have?

98 w/ a4 trans.

the code on the door says it should have 2.73's (gu2) but my mechanic that inspected it said the rear said 3.23 on it in paint marker (like from a junkyard). i just bought this car btw and have no idea of it's history besides carfax which doesn't tell you ****.

anyway- 1st gear goes to about 50mph and 2nd till about 90mph. seems LONG as hell to me so im guessing 2.73's but i don't know. it pulls good but it has some flat spots in the power curve. (pulls sick for a stock car though)

any help is appreciated.

I was wondering about the list of codes for the rearend myself. IF someone has them, please list.

As far as the ratio, don't trust a code or a lable. I suggest you check it yourself:
Block the front tires, jack up the car by the rear end, put the trans in neutral (take off the parking brake!) and rotate the tire one revolution while counting the number of turns of the driveshaft.

Less than 3 = 2.73
Just more than 3 = 3.23
Almost 3.5 = 3.42
More than 3.5 = 3.73

I hope that helps.

ablsolute best way to check a rear end gear ratio is to count the teeth inside the pumpkin.

if your car has a steel srive shaft, it has 2.73's. believe me. from your speeds, i'd say thats what you have. i'm a little higher than you, but i shift higher.

Though I agree with poweredbyv8, since there is no beating the math:

41/12 = 3.4166666

However, if you don't want to remove the cover, catch all that horrible smelling gear lub, replace the gasket and the gear lube just to count the teeth, then my way works just fine.

I have the GU6 code on my door, and the driveshaft rotated just under 3.5 times with 1 rotation of the rear tire. So, 3.42's it is!!

f-it, im sure the rear lube' could use a change anyway. im just really curious because if it has 2.73s' i may only go up to 3.23's but if it already has 3.23's... well, you get the picture. also like i said i don't think the driveshaft method will work because it looks like somebody was already down there ******* with stuff- who knows what was or wasn't replaced.

thanks for the replies. i REALLY don't see how 3.23's can go till like 92mph in 2nd gear at 6k rpms- these gears kind of suck because im crossing the traps just as i hit 3rd gear (flat spot at 3k rpm's). i can brake torque up to 1500rpms and pound it at the line and get minimal wheel spin?? yeah- ill check it out but they have to be 2.73's..

http://www.f-body.org/gears/ Is a great place to look at speeds. Looks like with 3.23's 1st gear should go to around 50 and 2nd to around 90. 2.73's would go to almost 60 and just over 105.

According to that site, I have 3.73s from the factory. Is this possible? I did buy the car with 15k miles also but the car didnt have any mods (not even a lid)

Just because it does not have a lid doesn't mean it isn't stock. I bought my car with FRA mod and stock lid.. also had SFC and STB. Unsure about the gearing in it now, but by comparing it to my brothers 2000 SS that he just got, I would think that I have 3.73's in it. Putting 4.10's in it now, so who cares

I dont think our cars came stock with that. That statement just places doubt Sleeper's head. Crack it open, otherwise you wont know if its the 2.73s or a doughnut and an icecream cone.

well then somebody with ******* 2.73's speak up and where does 1'st and 2nd shift at (a4). the 1st mod is a hard choice- hood w/bgra and then tsp duels but if i have the shitty gears then gears are first.. the goddam rear will be cracked open this weekend, and if i get gears then why not get differential etc...- so i guess i'll do some math then. i just thought there was an easier way..
