Question 2.73 swap to 3.23

I looked around for my answer, but didn't find anything.....please forgive me in advance if this has been asked a million times.

I have a set of 3.23 gears that I would like to swap into my 'bird. The rearend currently has 2.73 gears, so I was curious if the carrier for both gear ratios is the same? Basically, can I swap them into my car without buying a new carrier?

I know I'll need to get a basic installation kit. While it's apart I'll want to replace stuff anyways as the car has over 116,000 miles on it. Plus there's a small leak at the rear pinion seal that'll need some attention. I'll also be investing in a TA girdle while I'm at it. I can't afford a 9" right now, so I want to do whatever I can to the stock rearend.

Thanks in advance for any help.

The 3.23 gears I have are out of a 2001 Camaro.

I have (or had) a chance to get a converter for $200 bucks, but the funds are a little low right now I need to sell more artwork I guess....

youll need a new carrier to use em ... also its good to gears anaways to help dissipate the loose feeling of larger converters and you do feel and see some gains form gears

Going from 2.73 to 3.23 would be a waste of money and time IMO. At least go with 3.42s. You can use the same carrier if you get the thick gear. It's an inexspensive mod.I've been running my car like this for over two years now and it's holding up very well. I run my T/A on an 1/8th mile track four months out of the year on the average of 12 runs per outing, that includes 10 second burnouts per run.I'm going to run it till it breaks. I have an A4.I wouldn't recommend doing this in an M6.

I saw the thick gears on MTI's website that are made by Precision Gear. I think I'm gonna go with 3.73 gears. Now I need to sell the 3.23 gears, and score a deal on a set of thick 3.73 gears. Thanks for the help. Otherwise, I never would have known such a thing existed.

Some people will tell you it's not the best way to go. I was able to do this mod for $400. installed.Someday when I can afford it I will get something like a strange 12 bolt. So far it's holding up well and I run it pretty hard at the track. If a person wasn't racing their car these gears would probably hold up for a long time.

Good luck.

Dude, I would recommend going forward with the 3.23s. You know as well as I do that 2.73's suck. I went to 3.42's because I found them just as cheap as 3.23's, but her is next to NO difference. 3.23's are great for an A4. I would NOT do 3.73's! Huge traction issues once you get a converter, too many rpms on the freeway.

Well, I race the car quite a bit. I'd ultimately like to get a Moser 9" (they're facility is about 45 minutes from my house), but like you the funds aren't around for that right now....

The 3.23 gears I have (from the '01 Camaro) will not work with the 2 series carrier for the 2.73 gears that's in my car right now.

This car isn't my daily driver anymore, so I'm not too worried about rpm issues or bad gas mileage. A torque converter is another "down the road" item that is on my wish list right now.

Thanks again to everyone for their suggestions, comments, and advice!

some advise on gears, i have had every ratio from 2.56 to4.11 and would recommend the 3.73's. You will feel a huge difference. The car will feel much lighter and more responsive at all speeds. Don't bother with the3.23's, never use used gears because they wear into each other and if they are not set up pefectly they will whine all the time. the best bet is to find an entire rear with the right gears already set up from the factory, the cost will wind up the same because setting up gears is expensive if done right-ring &pinion-300, labor-200 bearings-100 new bolts,washers,clips-100, it adds up
ifyou can find the right rear you can install it with a friend and save on labor

if your rear has that many miles on it i would definitely look for alow mile used rear from a'01 or'02 with the right gears. good luck.

I agree with you 100%
It is easier to get traction with the 273 gear and a stall. Besides you will get more out of a converter than with any gear swap. The other benefit is this gear is easier on our glass 10 bolt.

I say do the 3.73, buy some tires that will give some traction, and have at it. If you go too sticky, you will be scraping up 10 bolt pieces from off of the track. If you plan on going further with the car you will really like the 3.73, it is my favorite street/strip gear with a shorter tire (26,27"). I work for Motive Gear, if you are interested in some parts drop me a pm or email me - mzoomora@msn.com.
