3.73 or 4.11 Gearing
I would like to know the best set up for my car..
The car will be out of the shop stroked to a 383 by next week.
It will be driven on the street 85% of the tim and to the track once a month...What do u guys/girls think about the gearing?
Also, how soon would i need a rear end?
Strang 12 Bolt or Moosier, or 9 inch???

"a new rear-end may come a lot sooner then you think...mine did"
lol,
Im thinking about getting gears too. I have a 1999 Z28 with a M6.
Whats the difference in driving between the 373 and 410s, such as the rpms while cruiising on the highway. I heard that 410s put a lot of stress on the stock rear end. Im not planning on doing any serious mods, just the usual bolt ons in the future, possibly a cam. I will upgrade to a 12 bolt later if I need to but the money is a little tight right now and Id like to keep it safe with the 10 bolt.
I also heard the switch from 343 to 373 isnt that noticeable and people recommend just getting 410s.
BTW Im not going to be doing hard launches, like with good tires and dumping the clutch, just mostly street driving.
Who ever has a 6 speed, tell me what you think

ive got a six speed and i cant decide myself, you arent going to be able to notice much difference from the stock 342s to 373's so i have heard. but i have also heard that 410s do put undue stress on the vehicle. assuming that this is all hearsay though, you may want to speak with more people who have had 410s or 373s for a while, i see that 6spdpewterz loves his 410s but he is also not making the track times that a 383 stroker will see, so i am still a bit apprehensive about jumping into a set till i hear a few more opinions.

Friend of mine has a built motor with a 200 shot. Will run 10s all day long and is a daily driver. He has a 4000 stall, & 3.42s in a 10bolt. He has had this setup for 2 years now and the 10bolt hasnt failed yet.
I have 4.10 in my 10bolt & mine is an A4 with 3500 stall. Id suggest you start saving for 12 bolt or 9".
Note to self: 3500 stall & 4.10s in a daily driver A4 gets crappy gas mileage.

for those of you wondering which gear 3.73 or 4.10's...i've done TONS of research
3.73's are the better gear for all around performance...on the street at the strip and in the corners. i have been infomred that stock internal top speed 4th gear is 130 mph. This is a must gear if you plan to spray or do some heavy internal work (i.e. Stroker, Radical Head/Cam, Forging) at 75 in 6th gear the mph is somewhere near what stock is which i think was 1400? i can not remember off the top of my head
4.10's are ideal for the weekend warrior and Strip performance mainly...top speed in 4th gear stock internals is approx. 110 mph...from my own knowledge and experience i would only get 4.10's if i plan on raising the Rev limiter to approx 6800 RPMs so i can stay in the power range longe so it is ideal for head/cam applications as well as FI...Nitrous is a NO-NO NO-GO...TOO MUCH SHIFTING too quickly...with a raised rev limiter head/cam on a 6 speed the cruising RPM at 75mph is approx 1800+RPMs not to shabby if ya ask me...but thats my opinion...some see closer to 2000 with stock internals
with an Auto Drag racing only for the 4.10's...daily driven is completely HORRID!!! no top end gas mileage is terrible due to the higher RPMs...if you plan to get the RAISE THE REV LIMITER HIGH! 7200 RPM is best form my experience of driving different cars and make sure you have the work to get the power through the RPM Range
3.42's and 3.73's are great for daily drivers (if you go from 2.73 if you have 3.23 jsut keep them and get a T/A girdle...remember SERIOUS RACING will require something higher) these are the best gears especially when stalled due to the fact that they have great drivability and tameness on the street...and they tear it up on the track...even better with a lower 6000-6600 RPM rev limiter...
i think that should answer any ?'s...if thats not enough sorry and if i have missed anything i am sorry as well
Thanks for reading
Adam

02ws6, what rpm are you basing that top speed in 4th with 4.10's?
That must be at a stock rev limiter. For example. My car with a 90 shot, 4.10 gears, 26" et street, went 134.5 mph crossing the traps at 7,000 rpm with a limiter of 7200.
I believe my 4.71 gear with 28" tire right now will get me to 130 MPH at 7200 rpm according to my calculations.
Whoever is saying 4.10 gear is going to stress a car...how? The only thing its going to effect is your rpm that you are at in any given gear on the street. 3-400 more rpm is not going to kill an ls1...

Stock heads and stock cam LS1 M6 F-body car w/4.10's and a 26" rear tire will go thru the 1/4 mile traps in 4th gear right about 5800 rpm. What is so bad about that? 4.10's are a perfect match for a M6 LS1 Fbody. (IMO) WJ

4.10 and M6 are to much for the 10-bolt, save your money get a good rear-end that wont go out on you left and right. im on my second 10bolt with about 7k miles and this one is on its way out....im pretty easy on the car with 16x8 street tires. be prepared to sacrifice all of your highway stomp for low end punch that will only damage your car. oh yeah and im workin on a fresh tranny rebuild which i will also blame the 4.10's on.
if there is one thing i regret its putting 4.10's in my 10bolt with a M6......
