Aluminum 9" center section....street worthy?
I currently have a Moser 9" with a nodular iron center section, and I was trying to find some ways to cut the weight from my car. I have talked to Strange and they said not to run the aluminum center sections on the street. They said you will experience shorter gear life. I asked him why and he couldnt tell me, just that it was what he was trained to say.
How many of you run them on street, say 2500-3000 miles a year? I would like to do the lighter center section and also lightened gears. I need some opinions.

You have to consider that a set of rear gears in a normal passenger car aplication can easily go over 150-200,000 miles if they are maintained. When they say reduced life that could be a mileage that you may never reach. Plus, the abuse would be more of a factor in limited gear life than the aluminum housing. If it were a heavy 4x4 with 35" plus tall tires it would be more of a factor.

If you are going to change to an aluminum center section, what differential are you planning on using. If you are going to run a spool, you may want to check out Strange's 12 bolt aluminum center section (35 and 40 spline are only available with a spool, 33 are available with a posi). It will supposedly bolt in place of the 9" center section, weighs 8-10 lbs less than a comparable 9" and is 3% more effeceint. I suspect it will require different length axles as well since ford uses odd ball length axles.
