Richmond 12 bolt gears??

Richmond 12 bolt gears??
I'm needing some 4.30's for my 12 bolt pretty quickly and everybody seems to be out of Motive or US gear 4.30's... but I can get some Richmond 4.33's today. I've ran Richmond 4.10's in a 10 bolt before and they were alot louder than the motive's I ran in the same rear after that. I wasn't real impressed with their "quietness" in my car or few other people's cars I've ridden in that had Richmonds in them. My question is.... Are the 12 bolt gears that Richmond makes louder than say a motive or strange? I need to buy today or tomorrow.. so post up if you have some info or opinion.

I made several phone calls last week trying to locate some 4.30 gears. Apparently, US Gear/Strange has discontinued that ratio. Motive has them on a 4 week back order (meaning thats either a new ratio for them, or they are also in the process of being discontinued). No one has any in stock. Richmond appears to be the only option at the present time. I've heard of Richmonds being quiet in a few cars, but noisy in far more cars. If the setup is dead on they might not be that bad though.

If you swap to 4.11's, get the Motive brand. Mine were dead silent on the street. They're cut / lapped differently than the Richmond/US Gears.

sounds good, motives and a solid pinion spacer and pray for my posi. I always thought gears were supposed to be loud on decel and silent on accel, mine are opposite, they are dead silent on decel and howl like a bitch on accel

The Motive Gear ring and pinions are double lapped, so they typically have a larger contact patch and more repeatable pattern. They also set up easier. Strange doesnt make their gears, they just use US gear. I would say that Motives do tend to be more quiet than the Richmond sets, but US gear sets are usually pretty good.
Also, it is possible to develop a noise if you are using a crush sleeve. If you launch hard it will cause the pinion bearings to loose their preload. Also, the solid spacer makes it a little easier to do the set up yourself since the crush sleeve can be hard to compress.

Stu mailed me back and said they are hardened to a rockwell "c" 60-64 and to a depth of .060. I'm going to go ahead and get the Richmonds. At the same time I'm installing new pinion bearing, carrier bearings, SOLID PINION BUSHING, I'll be leaving the axle bearings alone.. heck all of it has less than 1,500 miles.

I was going to go 4.56's, but I can't get excited about running a 28inch tire on the car, there's too much "adjusting" that people are having to do to get them fitting right. I'm going to do the 4.30's with the 26in ET drags I have now, if that isn't enough tire M&H makes a 27in slick that should fit without beating or cutting anything.

How 'bout a 28x9 ET Drag? It's 27" tall. All your bearings should be fine. I would just re-use them. What diff. does the hardness of the gears make? Not sure what that would matter to you.

I didn't set this last R&P myself. They got increasingly louder the more passes I made on them. After having the posi blow up on me, I think I found out why they were getting noisy when the left side carrier bearing fell off the carrier. It had been spinning on the carrier housing for some amount of time and was loose. The slop was causing the gear patter to change under load. I've setup 2 sets of US Gears and they were both very difficult to achieve a good looking pattern.

Race gears (9310) are a way softer material than 8620. The 8620 are better suited to street use and take launches well because of the hardness also can withstand multiple heat cycles for extended periods of time. 9310 is soft to help cushioon some of the impact to the teeth but fatigue real easy...

My Richmonds went in ----->Dead Silence for 3 years. Install has to be dead nuts though, and I guess mine were.

I tried to use richmonds 411 in my moser 12 bolt but they just would not pattern good.
You would get 3 different patterns as you went around the ring gear.Deffinatly a mismachined ring gear but they refused to help.I indexed the carrier to verify that was not the issue and ran the back of the ring gear on the surface plate looking for high
spots .No dice just a junk gear,bought motives and they whine to.I have had 7 ring and
pinions done by 3 different installers in 8 thousand miles and it's still noisy.Good luck with yours Gomer.

My 12 bolt sounds like a dump truck comming to a stop, when I slow down. I could never sell my car with it being this noisey. I have a mechanic purchasing me gears called the Yukon gears. I hope they quiet down a bit cause its hard to drive and or sell a car that howels and whines.
