Default 4.10 gear whine..

Is it normal for new 4.10's to whine a little or have they been set up wrong?
Thanks in advance...

You're gonna have to speak up because I can't hear you over the howling of my gears...

i think he has 4.10's in his factory 10 bolt

a 10 bolt w/ 4.10's shouldnt wine as bad as a 12 bolt w/ 4.10's. alot of your whine is probably due to the brand of gears you bought (some cut for strength and some cut for sound), and the setup. its a hit or miss kind of thing sometimes.

the 4.11's in my moser 12bolt are dead silent, i'm going for the all-out OVER-break in mileage, so i havent really launched it or gotten on it very hard, but i'm pleased. other people (like tranzor) have bad noise problems. usually a good setup can cure noise, always a good idea to take rear ends to a reputable shop.

Yeah, if you have a 10 bolt, it should be quieter than most 4.11 12 bolt gears... mine are really loud after a full season of racing. I had the rear taken apart recently by a very good transmission/drivetrain guy, he replaced all the bearings, reset the gears so they were nice and tight, and guess what... still every bit as loud.

Sometimes it's something we have to live with, unfortunately...

Truer words have not been spoken.

My 4.10s in my 10 bolt were silent, and this was with Richmond gears!

The 4.10s in my 12 bolt were a little noisey when they were new. But after beating them up at the track, my ears are ringing 10 minutes after getting out of my car, especially after traveling at freeway speeds.

It's the 4.10 reality.

There not real loud, however you can hear them when the radio is off ....
It is a stock 10 bolt but Maybe my expectations are to high. Time to make the exhaust louder...

My gears whine between 50 mph and 65 mph. It is true, something you gotta get used to. How high do you all launch on your stock 10 bolt? All I have on my 10-bolt is my 4.10's and launch at about 5000.

I used to launch on my 10 bolt with 4.10s at around 3000 rpms on Nittos... and I ended up shearing 8 teeth off the ring gear.

and see lots of my friends down here have stock 10 bolts with gears and launch hard everytime at the track and never break anything. I launch a couple of times and bust an axle, the carrier and the gears. (when I had the 3.42's). I am new to et streets and love them but I should lay off the hard launches before I have to get a 12 bolt... Sorry for hijacking the thread

My first set of gears were set up wrong and sounded like a bunch of howler monkeys. I took (towed) it back to the guy and he replaced it. The gears were eat up pretty bad. About my new setup with my exhaust I don't even know if it's whining. I'm pretty sure it's not because when I first got the gears done I didn't have this exhaust and there wasn't much whine. I think it all has to do with the install. If they are put in right they will be much quietier.

I don't know if I should get 4.10 or 3.73 on my a4. I have a 97 Formula. Also out of Strange, Motive, and Richmond, what would you guys choose?

Myself if I had a A4 I would chose 3.73's but I'm on the conservative (sp?) side most of the time.

What would the differences between 4.10's and 3.73's be performance wise? I don't race my car at the track, so top speed isn't very crucial. Do 4.10's wear out? I hear the 4.10's are fun to drive I'm pretty agressive, so it is hard for me to choose between them BTW, I would be coming off from a stock 3.23.

I have 4.10's in my M6 and they are a lot of fun. I had More performance install them and there was a little noise during the first 100 or so miles but quiet ever since. The only problem is getting any traction with street tires.

Enjoy it

And put a sticky tire on, take it to the track, race the **** out of it, and report back to us...

You almost need nittos with your 4.11s or else you might be sideways if your going to do any fast take offs

If it is richmonds yeah if it is anything else probably these lower the ratio the more noise created.

I went through 6 4.10 ring and pinions.

Out of all them, the Richmonds were the quietest.

For street use 4.11s are plain silly in an A4. 1st gear take-offs are stupid in the wet and you couldn't win a street light race to save yourself. 3.73 are great in an A4. When matched to a decent 3000 stall you won't want to think about gears again.
