Default Automatic with 2.73s or with 3.373s

Would it be a waste of time to put in 3.73s in my stock trans am. I am pretty sure right now it was 2.73 gears it being an automatic. Would i just sit there and blaze the tires or would it really help out in acceleration.

I'd suggest saving for a converter.

definitely get a converter before anything. ive got a yank 3800 with my 2.73's and I cannot hook up at all. I'm gonna NEED to have some kinda tire out back. I love my setup but it is a little loose. I think 3.23's or 3.42's would be perfect with what I"m running. I can see where 3.73's with a converter would be very hard to hook up.

lots of discussion in this topic in the gears and axles forum, so I'll move your question in there.

i had 2.73's on my automatic and i put on the 3.73's and it makes a BIG difference. The lower gears make the car a whole lot more fun to drive.

I decided on gears A TC is kind on weird to drive. You'll get better gains at the track With a nice TC But driving a car with a TC is kind of annoying to me so I just did 3.73's If you do gear you won't be dissappionted. Just my opinion.

I went with the TC first. I will get gears (moving from a 3.23 to 3.73) when the rear end starts to give me trouble. Gears will compliment the TC for low speed driving and acceleration.

YES, TCs are a little annoying to drive (spongy at low speeds), but after a couple thousand miles you get used to it. I hate going uphill following someone slow at 30MPH. My engine revs at 3k! When I am on the freeway and traffic slows down, my car downshifts out of overdrive and to accelerate the car rides in the converter a bit. I find myself wanting to go at least 40 MPH so the converter locks up.

Default 2.73-3.73 ?

IMO I like both and don't have serious traction issues using Nittos 555, BMR lcr's w/relocation brackets and the same for the panhard bar, and apoly bushing for the torque arm. Pulled offf 1.71 60' w/ 20 psi in the tires launching at 1500 rpms . 3.73 & 3200 TC

I think 3.23's and a converter is PERFECT for a daily driver. I actually loved my 2.73's too. Car pulled 1.6 60 fts with a 3200 stall, slicks, and a couple of bolt-ons.
