Default Automatic with 2.73s or with 3.373s

Would it be a waste of time to put in 3.73s in my stock trans am. I am pretty sure right now it has 2.73 gears it being an automatic. Would i just sit there and blaze the tires or would it really help out in acceleration.

if its a WS6 it has 3.23's. if not it has 2.73's
and i would go with a converter instead of gears but either way you would need some better tires.

Not necessarily, my T/A, non ws6 has 3.23 gears. Just look for the RPO code, GU5 for 3.23s. Or GU2, for 2.73s.

3.73 is optimum on stock converter for street driven A4s. You wont blow off the tyres from a flash at the track either.

If you go a converter, there is no difference between 3.46 and 3.73. 3.73 MAY give you a slightly higher trap speed - but thats about it.

Terrible information. OBviously, since they are different gear ratios, there IS a difference.

I prefer my 4.11s in the automatic anyway.

I love my setup ... perfect for a street rod ... not shabby at the track, either.

Steady on the saccharin there DietCoke.

Proven fact that either 3.73 or 3.46 with a converter will result in negligible differences at the track. Ive proved it. Many others here in OZ have proved it and so say PREDATOR, JRP and COLONEL (just do a search on diff gears and 3.46 or 3.73).

Now with a stock converter the difference is more noticable - just more free revving and its easier for the low TQ to drive through the converter stall.

The general rule is the more power you make the lower the diff ratio you need.

Ive had both 3.46 and 3.73 and for a stocker bolt-on A4 3.73 is optimal for a street/stripper. Strip only and I would probably go 3.91 or 4.11.

Stocker 4.11 is better IMO because you get more use of your three gears your going to be in. Same thing for 3.73 over 3.42, more use of the gears your going to be in (spend more time higher up in the powerband)

The little negligible differences are what make a winning combination. They add up.
