Default gm additive
I have a 2002 Z28 and plan on changing diff. fluid this weekend. Do I need the gm additive or not???

yes you will need a posi additive or it will grind. i just changed mine tonight. i used a additive made by transX, with mobil1 75w90. car is a lot smoother now.

If you use a premium oil like Royal Purple, Redline, or even Lucas gear oil, you won't have to put in additive. They come with additive in it already.

explain......i notice better traction since i changed to mobil1 syn, less with the old generic 80w90

Posi & Synthetic don't mix...at least if you have an Eaton diff. The synthetic lubricates so well that the diff cluth plates slip.

Torsens (99 and up) REQUIRE synthetic. Read your owner's manual. They usually add the additive to the Torsens too to prevent the "rusty screw" sound that sometimes happens.

oops....i forgot to add the additve in my diff. change on mt lat oil cahnge....i used mobil 75 90....but i havent really noticed the difference.....but im gonna add it the next time...hell i just forgot

You don't need to add limited slip, Mobil oil has it already! Use the money to buy a 6-pack

Just to confirm:

Torsen = Synthetic only, no additive.

Is this correct? I am changing the fluid in my torsen rear end too. I do not want to put anything unnessesary in there.

Premium gear oil and no additive! Just buy some Lucas from the auto parts store. It will actually "walk" up the gear set as they are spinning, good protection. Forget the additive unless you are using bargain basement oil

Torsens require synthetic...it's in the manual!!!

BADSZ28...yes you are correct. Mobil synthetic is what the shop put in the mine, and the additive is optional.

What about on a 98 rear end 3.42? I bought 2 qts of Royal Purple. I thought was enough.

im not exactly sure but i beleive the 98 cars had auburn difs. and that they dont require synthetic. some correct me if im wrong. and i dont think they will require the additive. i could be totally wrong... =P
