Default Broke My Axle - Bye 10 Bolt Hello 12-bolt

Ran a couple of runs on motor to get things warmed up. Got a new best of 12.81 at 112.15 with a crappy 2.1 60'
Played with the N2O and got down to 12.22 at 119.23 with a 1.96 60' (my first ever sub 2 sec 60')

Then, on my final run, I was going for 11's, cranked up the N2O another notch and launched at ~4k, boom!! the car stops dead. Look under the car, drive shaft fine, but rear is locked tight. 4 guys can barely push it off the track. Tow it home, remove the rear end, look inside and found the left axle had twisted and snapped at the point of where the splines mate with the carrier. Good thing I ordered the Moser 4.11 12-bolt 2 weeks ago. It is scheduled to arrive Monday. 11's will have to wait.

Same thing happened to me, they kept saying your going to bust the gears but no the gears were the only thing still ok in my 10 bolt. I have the moser and other than gear whine it's been great. Good luck with yours.

I'm curious if I should be worried... my best is a 13.074 @ 104 with a 1.7 60' time... I'm running DR's (soon to be ET Streets) with a YANK ST3500... This is also at 3,000ft... I should be pretty good into the 12's if I go up to Phoenix (Speedworld or Firebird). I'm just wondering because Raughammer has yet to break his... so I keep telling myself I wont break mine...

Are you guys six speeds or A4???

You should be ok with an A4...it's us M6 guys that have to worry.

Yeah, you A4 guys can preload your rear end at the line which reduces or nearly eliminates the shock to the drive line. Launched hard, a 10-bolt behind an M6 is a ticking timebomb.

4500rpms + 28in ET Streets + Spec Stage 3 Kevlar + 350rwtq = 1 broken axle and a cracked Torsen case/ $300 repair =>rebuilt eaton posi + low mileage 2000 axle.

Now in a purely theoretical sense subsitute 350rwtq with 526rwtq and imagine the product.

I'm gonna be autocrossing the car for fun until I can afford a 9in or a 12bolt. Gotta fill up the racing void and I sure aint gonna launch soft or run street tires.

Same exact thing happened to me. I am not running on the bottle but after a few 13.1's I decided it was time for a more agressive launch. I was running Kumho street tires, ran it up to about 3000RPM and BANG! Bye Bye left rear axle. another thing though is that it also twisted the splines just outside the sidegears on both axles so right now I can't get them out. I am saving for a 12 bolt.

Been following info. on 10bolt breakages and it appears Zexel diff. breaks axles 9 out of 10 times. I beleive this to be a credit to not having typical spiders and side gear set up. I wonder if a real set of axles with a T/A cover might strengthen this setup dramatically.Also keep the 3;42 gears. This set up might be the answer for us near stock motor m6 guys. At least till we can afford a 12bolt down the road. Any body try this?

Strange 12 bolt 411/gears and 28" M/T Drags I was leaving @ 4000 rpm's on the transbrake and cutting 1.41-1.46 60's. the last run was leaving @4500-4800 and snapped the tq arm in half...

Dave, Yup, it was the left lane. Sure was hooking hard Saturday. Got my 12b in now. Breaking it in, getting a little whine on accel, none on decel, some intermittent on coast. Ordered a Nitrous Ready ds from Denny's w/ billet trans yoke. Should be here by Saturday for my next assault on 11's.

Awesome.... You'll definitely be in the 11's soon. Interesting you mention the whining. I have quite a bit when it's cruising at 70, some on decel.

I'm going to come see you run the 11's soon. Unfortunately this Saturday morning is going to be spent pulling the axle to change reluctor rings. The wheel speed sensor loosened up and took itself out along with the reluctor wheel. Yikes!! It'll give me a good chance to change the fluid though.

See you soon...
